Okay, I'm a really bad snake owner. My snake is about a year old, and I handle her every month or so. I go away on work a lot, and get a friend to feed her, but he won't handle her. Every time I approach, she still strikes at me. If I leave my hand there a while she starts to ignore it, but it's really hard to keep still after a while, and if I move it she strikes again instantly. I move the viv very gently onto my lap, and leave it there for ages, and she starts to explore, but doesn't leave the viv, even though the lid is off. And again, if I move at all, she goes defensive. She even coils up at the movement of my breathing.
Should I keep trying, or let somebody who knows that they're doing have her? (my first snake, and I really do love her, but can't seem to do anything right!)

If you can, you should try and handle her for abou 5-10min every day.
Where abouts in England do you live and what type is she?

My friend did that with her corn so what we did is just held it about 5mins each day for about 2weeks then increased it to 10 for 2 then 15 and by then it knew her smell, wash your hands before handling so there's no scent that may cause the snake to get aggitated and that means the smell will always be the same and s/he will know it's you and calm down, it does take time but it's worth it.

yeah, i try, but she's very skittish, so i'm worried if i just try to grab her it'll hurt her. so i try to leave my hand there until she investigates it on her own, but the slightest movement will put her on the defensive again, and i can't hold my arm absolutely still long enough.
im in east sussex, and she's a normal corn.
 
Well,you could try and give him some time, but if you want to get rid of him and get another corn which you know isn't aggressive. I would take him off your hands, lol, even buy him. IM about 25miles for east sussex, I would pick up, lol

I shall keep her. I couldn't bear to see her go. So I shall persist. I thought I read somewhere that you can never actually tame them. Is this right?
I have put my glove in with her, so she has something that smells like me. She doesn't seem to mind at all, but that's probably because it doesn't mive without my hand in it!
