My Rescue Lawnmower: the reptilian kind

El Jefe

Mark 16:18
Yep, that's what he is. A lawn mower.

Anyone who's ever dealt with one of these adult creatures knows they are an eating machine and that is their purpose in life. He is keeping my lawn very neat.

Meet Pablo the Sulcata Tortoise.

His previous owner died and the wife no longer was able to care for him and my name entered the ring. I had a look and figured he'd be perfect back at my place. Plus, I happen to have a tortoise pen where I put rescue box turtles with cracked shells and other rescue turtles but haven't had any since early last year. So...the empty pen is now Pablo's home!

Enjoy!!!

First pictures of his home....

Nice! Are you going to build him a shelter for winter? I can't imagine taking on such a huge tortoise. Hopefully you'll provide lots of updates!!

Actually, if you look at the third picture of the tortoise yard you'll see in the upper left the opening to his hideaway. He'll have heat pads and lights for the winter and on sunny warmish days he'll be let out.

I've heard people say that as long as they have a warm house, they'll come out and graze in light snow!

Nice lawnmower! Looks like it is built well and should preform well for years to come!

Congrats on the rescue. :)

That is so cool! I love the sulcatas and really wish we had room for one. I second Nanci's request for future updates!!

You’re a brave man Jeff. That is one enormous commitment. Looks like you have just the right place for him though.

Thanks for the comments all!

Yeah, I know. I wasn't sure I was ready for that step but the alternates for this guy were bleak. One was sending him to animal control where he'd probably be put to sleep. The other was to give him to a local guy that would sell him at the flea market....who knows where he'd end up. So, with the lady telling me those were the options I kinda had to take him. When I worked at the zoo I took care of these so I'm fairly familiar with their care and I do have many contacts (zoo and otherwise) that could probably take him if he ever proved too much for my place or my circumstances changed. For now, however, his home is here.

beautiful tort. that was about the size of mine when i had to give him up. i had to go to school and my parents did not want to take care of him. he lived in a big section of my basement for the most part. but when i took him outside all the neighbors came over and were so interested. my dogs loved him to. i miss my franklin.
