The religion thread of misery and changing no minds

Folks, if you want to discuss the bible, talmud, koran, or your invisible giant of choice; here's a place for it. You can cut and paste scientific discoveries and rail against them all day in here! Think of it as your own special containment unit.

I'll start it off with the Easter challenge. Did you know this heathen claims that you can't say what happened on Easter, the most important of Christian holidays, by reading the scriptures? http://www.ffrf.org/books/lfif/?t=stone Oddly, he backs it up in a rather scientific fashion too, showing discrepancies between the gospels. This has to have holes in it, right?

I welcome a thread like this that will leave me informed and educated.

As a Christian, I look forward to being informed and enlightened. Thank you Elrojo for posting this thread.

I'll be the first to step in a say it....

Be careful. Politics and religion are HEAVY topics. Keep it friendly and clean. No hitting below the belt.

If this thread turns into a run-away thread with a lot of reported posts it'll be closed....plain and simple.

The political thread has been pretty good so lets keep this one the same way and we all might learn something...or at least read something that may make us think.

I, too, am looking forward to an informational discussion.

I'll be the first to admit that the likelihood of anyone changing their mind on such a subject is super slim, but debate is *usually* fun here. I thought an area besides a thread discussing a new fossil would be better for religious discussion.

This thread coming from a guy with the Flying Spaghetti Monster as his avatar. :rolleyes:

I'm onto you Chip! :nyah:

It's also coming from the same guy that thinks feeding snakes in a seperate bin from their viv, is the sixth sign of the apocalypse!

(Sorry, I had to!)

You mean it's not?! Well darn and all that time I saved feeding in the viv was for naught? :sidestep:

Chip, I just found this, and...maybe...thank you for it. I guess.
(I'll go to any interesting thread. Sometimes only read,...sometimes post.)
I must live in a special world, surrounded by special people, but I truly posted the fossil thread in celebration, naively not expecting nearly so much debate, etc.

"Containment Unit"......... :roflmao:

I love religion and find it fascinating. However, I tend to be skeptic of organized religion...I don't like people telling me what and how to think. At times I fail to see the difference between organized religions and cults...except that one of them are more socially acceptable. I was raised Christian, but I prefer to think of myself merely as a philosopher, I like to think about the universe. But anyone who tells me that they 'know' the truth I tend to be skeptical about.

I always thought Leviticus was a wacky book. Here are some reasons we go to hell:
* eat fruit from a tree less than five years old. [Lev. 19:23]
* cross-breed animals. Especially corns and kings (made up that last part)[Lev. 19:19]
* grow two different plants in your garden. Seriously. [Lev. 19:19]
* wear a cotton-poly blend T-Shirt. [Lev. 19:19]
* read your horoscope.[Lev. 19:26]
* consult a psychic. [Lev. 19:31]
* cut your hair. not the Mercury Rev song. [Lev. 19:27]
* trim your beard. Billy Mays is SO going to Hell.[Lev. 19:27]
* are tatooed. [Lev. 19:28]
* plant crops for more than seven years. I guess you gather nuts and berries that year off?[Lev. 25:4, Ex. 23:10-13]
* bear a grudge, like the guy who thinks I'm an anti separate feeding nazi. [Lev. 19:17]
* collect interest on a loan. [Ex. 22:24]
* insult a leader. Not even "Barrack" or Bush. [Ex. 22:27]
* mistreat a foreigner. Even a Canadian on a Corn snake forum.[Ex. 22:21, 23:9]
* spread false rumors. [Ex. 23:1]
* drive a Mercury. [Ex. 23:13] (Look it up.)

Chip, you are evil and must be taken to the gate and stoned.
Deuteronomy 21 : 18-21.

At which time as a human man, who can not possibly be sure,....I know you will go straight to he11.

I posted this story once before but I think it bears repeating and fits well in this thread.

The people were gathered in the town square and were stoning a prostitute to death. Jesus step between the woman and the angry mob, held up his hands and said, “let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”

Suddenly, theewap, a big old rock came flying through the crowd and caught the hooker right in the forehead. She went to the ground. There was silence. Slowly the crown parted until the culprit stood alone. There stood the Virgin Mary.

Jesus looked at the ground and shook his head. Then he said, “You know mother, sometimes you really piss me off.”

I have been having semi-arguments with my mom recently about religion. My dad is getting older and has had lukemia for a while and his health is declining, slowly and its not really bad but she has become really religious latley. Not just going to church on sunday but 3x a week and asks me to go to church with her every time I see her. I am an athiest, and according to her beliefs I sin pretty much all day every day according to mine I know how to have a good time. I have no issue with anyone elses beliefs except when they tell me they are fact (without any proof) and badger me to think like them or go to church with them.

A few weeks ago my mom asked if my daughters could spend some time with her and my dad on their school vacation I said sure but don't drag them to church, if they want to go thats absolutly fine (since they are girls I figure they will be ok..lol) but don't force them. When I picked them up they said gramma made us go to church with her (my dad isnt religious and refuses to go) and I was furious. Her excuse was since they hear my views they should have something to compare them to. Now my girls dont want to visit my parents because they fear being dragged to church. I have no issue at all with anyones beliefs but when they are forced on me or my children it becomes an issue.

I asked my mom if religion hadn't been forced down her throat since she took her first breath, if she had never heard of jesus and walked into a bookstore and picked up a copy of the bible would she classify it as fiction or non fiction. She just said she will pray for me.

Danny,
I come from a very religious family and I am not. I know where you are coming from on that score. How would you like some food for thought? My parents are in their 80’s. Their health is failing and I would imagine they will die sometime in the not too distant future. My parents know that I don’t believe in the same things they do. But how much of a sacrifice is it to spend a few hours in church with your mother if it gives her comfort and makes her happy. I don’t mean every week, but every once in a while isn’t asking much.

I agree with ya, Wade. On the other hand, I wouldn't want my kids being taken somewhere they didn't want to go, though.
