In the last couple of days we've noticed that 'ol Ichabod seems a bit edgy. His disposition is still good though when handled. We've also noticed that the colors near his mid section down to his tail have a bit less contrast and that (most noticably) his black and white belly squares look gray and very blurred. Since he hasn't shedd yet (since we've owned him anyway), I'm wondring if these are the early signs of an up and coming shed?

Yes...

They get very dull before shedding. Pretty soon Ichabod will be dull all over, and his eyes will be cloudy. Within a week to ten days, he should shed.

Okay that makes sense. Is his belly the obvious place to look for signs of shedding?

I also noticed that he was jamming his head between my fingers today when I was handling him. I've never seen him do this before but I think I now know what he's up to. ;)

Tomorrow is feeding day. Shall we give him a small pinkie and see if he takes it or wait until a shed?
 
I would offer him a pinky on his regular feeding day...Some corns will eat during shed some won't...All of the corns I have but one will eat during the shed...Try it, if he eats no harm, if he doesn't no harm either...

I would say that its easier to tell when their eyes go blue (cloudy). There are other tell tale signs, like you saw with his skin going dull but the most obvious is cloudy eyes which looks kinda freaky when you first see it (or at least it looked kinda freaky to me!)

Whee! Draco just shed today. Perfect too, eye lenses and tail and everything. He had it wrapped around his tree.

Do you have anything hard in the tank that'll help the process? I suppose the sides of the tank will do the job, but...*shrug*

I've heard about upping the humidity, adding humid hides, giving the snake a bath, etc. but I'm guessing that's only for problem shedders?

Good job Draco!

'Ol Ichabod has an Exo-Terra water bowl which is ver rocky and a rocky cave for one of his hides. He went totally blue on Monday and Tuesday but by Wed. he was clear again. After we handled him today he spent 5 or 10 minutes sticking his head in the Repti-Bark sub. and wrapping around his water bowl so we expect to find a shed skin in his viv. any day now.

About an hour after I mentioned the rock water bowl, Ichabod shed is skin on it. Everyhing was perfect from his eye caps to the tip of his tail.

Maybe next time we'll get to watch!

lol yeah I dunno if htye all do it but my 2 both ALWAYS clear from clouding on the usnday morning and shed on the wednesday without fail. I've been lucky enough to see them all on my big boy but missed my little girl - plenty more to come though;)
