A Couple of Recent Finds...

First...a yearling Black Rat, appears to be a female. She showed up in a neighbor's hallway...yep, that's right, cruisin' in the hall. She has a great disposition and eats like there's no tomorrow.
And an Eastern Hog-Nose. Loves to hiss and do its best impression of a cobra, but it's all for show!:) Hard part about these guys is they feed on toads & frogs.

That Black Rat is sweet! It looks like it's well on its way to becoming a nearly sold black adult. Here's one I found in Ohio a couple months ago.

Great find. I am thinking about getting a hog-nose.
They're such a cool snake with their defense mechanisms...
That black rat is gorgeous.
Yea I think so too, and she really seems to be a sweetheart too!

Definitely! Over the past couple of years, I've seen a few adults/sub-adults within an 1/8 mile of me, and every specimen was very black...very cool!

Nice finds John. That Black Ratsnake looks like he is going to be a pretty solid black snake and what's not to like about a Hoggy. Again, nice finds.

Jay

Nice finds. I wish where I live there was such a nice variety. We have a few species of garters here though, and I still never get tired of finding them.

OK...here's an update on these two. Just forget about the previous pics, they don't do these two justice!:)
I decide to forget using the "auto" feature on the digital camera and do things right...and whala! Good pics (imagine that)

Very nice!!! I'd love to find either of these, but I'm completely in the wrong part of the country for that. LOL.

Soooo, you gonna keep them or re-release them? You mentioned that they eat frogs/toads, so I was wondering if you were gonna go through the hassle of switching them over.

The black rat (female) eats like a champ so far. The plan is to keep the hoggie...if she's a girl her name's gotta be Ms. Piggy. If I can stock up on snacks for her this summer she'll have what she needs until it warms up. I've already tried to trick her by washing and drying hoppers, then storing the hoppers with the toads...and 'she' didn't fall for it the first time. I'll be patient.

The benefit if I keep 'em is I could use them in school programs and with our local herp society for the purpose of education/conservation. We'll see how it goes.

Well, congrats on getting the black rat to switch over! Very kewl. Gonna be one nice looker.

Good luck on the hoggie and hope it switches soon. Glad to see that you're using the opportunity to teach. I get into my kids' school as often as I can! LOL.
