Heating

Hi, I am so close to getting my corn snake, everything is set up, except the kind of heating I will need. I live in Australia, so extremely hot summers and harsh winters.

In the summer I figured a simple light would suffice, when I owned lizards I used coloured globes, red or blue that were good for basking. And for the winter I thought a heat pad would do, as well as the light. I was also considering having a climbing log beneath the light, is this recommended?

I'm guessing snakes do not need a basking stone like my Iguana used?

Most members around here would recommend an under tank heating pad coupled with a rheostat or thermostat. During the cold winters, you may need to use an overhead light as well. Just make sure the snake can't directly touch the light, as it can and will burn itself.

I think a climbing log beneath the light would be a great idea, even when it's not on. It's good to give snakes something to climb on to keep them active.

Just keep a thermometer with a probe or a thermostat in your snake's tank and make sure you're keeping the warm side as close to 80-85 degrees fahrenheit as possible.

I agree with Bobby. Go with a regulated heat pad. Use the light in the winter if your room is VERY cold and you need it.
