I just had a brilliant idea! I think we should have a sub forum about reptiles, more specifically Corn Snakes, for those who come here to share their enthusiasm for their scaly pets.

Has this issue ever been a problem before? I like the general chit chat..gives me a spot to talk about..well...life..lol

There have been a lot of anti-Obama threads lately. I don't agree with all of them. But I also realize that if I don't feel like reading the political threads, I simply do not click on them.

Ah, the freedom to click or not to click!

As far as I remember, the General Chit Chat forum is the ONLY sub forum here not devoted to corns (I guess there is the arboreal forum, too, that is not for corns). So this is the only forum to avoid if you like to only discuss corn snakes. Of course, this is one of the most active sub forums, because lots of people here seem to like to discuss general stuff, I guess. To each his own - variety is the spice of life!

Well, at the rate his approval ratings are falling, there'll be lots more of it... (anti-Obama threads).

I walked away from CS.com for awhile when things were going "the other way", and that was my choice. I came back and decided to MOSTLY hang around in the non-political threads. Every now and again, I have found myself going back and forth with them. Now, when I get frustrated or feel that my thoughts have been laid out, I step aside and look at them from time to time.

One thing I have come to realize (or REMEMBER actually) is that I'm probably not gonna change anyone's mind, so I just say my piece and let it alone... well, for the most part. LOL.

It is true that a post or two will probably not TOTALLY change my mind most of the time. But there have been times when other perspectives have enlightened me enough to change my mind A LITTLE. Sometimes those with different experience and outlooks will provide some views that I had not considered. My BASIC outlook on life may be fairly well set, but my stance on a particular issue could be swayed by new info or perspectives. That is why I like to read / listen to people who come from very different backgrounds than I do. It can be frustrating to read posts from those whose ideas are diametrically opposed to mine. But if I only read those who agree with me, what chance would I have to learn anything new?

What's with all the whining lately? Did I miss the memo?

(Someone accused me of being nice. I'm steering them back on track.)

Too true, Kathy. I have learned quite a few things from the political threads (including the fact that one or two answers on that Liberal/Conservative/Statesman/Libertarian quiz can change a GREAT deal). I also learned that I'm not as "Right Winged" as I thought... although obviously MUCH further right than some. :D

(Lori, i STILL think you're nice!!! Curmudgeon, indeed!).

so how bout them yankees??? heh??? (sorry...had to be the one who drove this train off it's tracks..lol)

most of my politics come from via cs.com or the colbert report when i find it on tv. i am in know means a politcal guy. i ask my dad for voting advice and about peoples standpoints when i have to.

if you dont like politics just quickly open a thread you unsure of and skim it quickly, and if you dont like the looks you always can go back. its not that hard to move the mouse up there to hit the back button.

It's not that I'm trying to complain, and I completely understand general chit chat's purpose, and my ability to look away. I however feel less involved in this site with each passing day, and can't help but associate it with all of the political stuff. I don't see nearly as many new members posting as I use to, and can now easily identify and predict a large number of peoples political perspectives, and have yet to learn many new things about people.
It seems like everyone who gets involved in the political threads has a predictable pattern of viewpoints (including myself), so I don't see why there are so many new threads of the same old same. I think it's fair to point out, and might really determine the future success of this site overall. I can handle debates, and have had some great ones in the past, but think that I'm nearing the point where the negative is outweighing the positive.
I see people post artwork, new pets, etc... and the responses are limited to a page, maybe two, but anything political, especially controversial, ends up being 10-20 pages long.
A couple months ago I was excited to become a contributing member, and the outpouring of initiative towards the reptile ban bills really made me feel like I would be doing my part by becoming a contributing member. Now I'm just not sure of my future on this site, and feel like some of those in charge have been expressing their views in such a manor that I don't feel like a contributors membership would become the helpful tool that it once was.
I could be totally wrong, and might be the only one who feels this way. But it is the way I feel none the less, and I have been here long enough to know that this constant spread of politicking wasn't always so common, and it was a much more inviting site before.

I don't read all of the political threads but, Michael, it seems to me that you have posted in the ones I've read lately.

Pfft, it'll take more than that to prove the opposite- face it, you're a nice person :nyah:

As for the General Chit-Chat... well, no I don't think you need to fix something that isn't broken.
However, I do know that adding another forum is usually not so much work... at least in with the site I am handling it takes around 2 minutes.

The reason why General Chit-Chat is so active is because the amount of subjects it encompasses is limitless... now, it's all about the purpose of this forums as the moderators and owners see it.
Do they want to allow people who aren't cornsnake enthusiasts, or people who also like other snakes a corner where they can talk about their other snakes?
Whilst the General Chit-Chat seems to work fine, I can say from personal experience that a lot of time your thread drowns in the onslaught of rant-like threads, or political threads et cetera... again, that's not necessarily a bad thing, as the focus is and should be cornsnakes.

So Michael, I kind of agree, it could be nice. But it not necessarily goes hand in hand with the purposes of this site. Currently, nothing is broken so there's no immediate need for a fix. Said "upgrade" could be nice, but that's up to the moderators to see if they WANT such am board actually implemented.

If you don't like them, don't read or participate in 'em. I won't pretend I can follow the issues raised around the political system in the USA, but I enjoy reading the 'insider's viewpoint' instead of just media portrayal. Generally brumation time is when it really goes offtrack in here, you can't really just keep posting 'snakes all asleep' then so everything else gets more airtime.
