Anyone have any recommendations for a dry dog food, that is fairly good quality, yet affordable.

My dog food is getting a little too pricy for me to afford ($14 for 4 lbs), and I am thinking about switching. I'd still like something with good quality (i.e. not purina, iams, etc...) but something I can afford.

What do you recommend, besides the RAW diet.
 
Ok, well there's Canidae, Chicken Soup... Do you mind me asking what your budget is? Those two are a pretty good bang for your buck.

There's corn gluten meal in it... and for the price, I wouldn't feed it, personally. It actually caused major ear issues in my spaniel mix because of the corn.
 
I am really enjoying RAW, but before this I feed Nutro and was happy with it (good quality and $32 for 40#), I am just happier with RAW.

My brother feeds both his labs(who are both corn allergic) chicken soup. He pays about 35 dollars for a (I think) 30 lb bag.
 
i feed chicken soup and pay $35 for 35lbs.

chicken soup is given 4 stars(out of 6 possible) on the dog food analysis site

I forgot to add that Kirkland (Costco) brand dog food is surprisingly good for the price. It rates 3 stars on DFA.com and is only about $20 for a 40lb bag. No wheat, corn, or soy, meat meal as a first ingredient. Manufactured by Diamond.

Also, if Kim or anybody else is interested, I have an email coupon I can forward you for a FREE 5lb bag of Nature's Variety grain free kibble. I feed raw but I use them for training treats - very high quality food. If anyone would like the coupon (it has no ID code, the company is giving them out like candy) just PM with your email address.
 
I feed Wellness as I can't get much else that is premium at the local petco...

if you have access to it Taste of the Wild is the new "it" food right now, also solid gold isn't bad for the price.


Canidae changed their formula not to long ago and they lost alot of customers over it...also there is a big think with natural balance right now...they changed a formula and dogs are crapping blood.

But anyway, I feed wellness and am happy with it. Its about $50 for 35 lbs tho. Not sure what your budget is... Solid gold is about $50 for 40lbs.
 
I agree Kirklands is good stuff...but you have to have a costco membership obviously. I'd feed it if I was on a budget before alot of stuff.

*nod* :) It's my favorite budget food.

I also know people who use it in rotation to cut the price of a higher quality food. My friend does that with Honest Kitchen (a dehydrated base) + raw, and feeds Kirkland 2-3 times a week.
 
We feed Kirkland for the price and quality and love it. Chicken soup made my lab have horrible diarrhea and though wellness is great its kinda pricey:(

My ex had a 21 year old labrador fed only pedigree.

I actually was really happy with eukanuba back in the day.


amazing how that stuff works out like that...my occasional raw...grain free fed dogs are going to die at 5.
 
*shrugs* I have tried high end...raw....everything under the sun. Purina One may be the devil in some eyes...but it's what I feed. My parents feed that and pedigree and the dogs have almost all lived into their late teens. Can we ask any better of a dog than that? Nah!
Sure you might eak another year or so out of their life...but is it a good year? I just don't see it.
It's one thing if your pet has allergies. We feed high end cat food because Miss Princess Picky Pants gets the trots on the cheap stuff...but my grandmother had a 22 year old cat who lived his whole life on Meow Mix and wild mice.
Who are we to say what extends life and health? Tests may show a lot about that...but family experience says otherwise.
