early egg laying

a friend gave me a female corn,because her heat mat gave in and rather than replace it ,decided that she didn't want the snake,
so i get three day 's latter,checking her over ,convince she might be gravid ,put a shoe box in her viv,4 day's later she drops 7 eggs, brill i think thats were the problem starts she still has 7 visable eggs left inside her,thats now aweek ago,another friend belives that because she had no heat for a few days that she may well have abort the first 7,that it wasn't her time.

and to give her 2 weeks to drop the other 7

can snakes do this ? she is very protetive of her nest box,

There is a possibility of her being egg bound. This could be life treatening. I don't think that the few days without heat is going to make her lay eggs and then keep the others inside. I have never heard of this. If it's an egg bound, refer to the corn snake manuel and you'll know what you can do.

i've never heard of it either,but i wonder was it really 3 days with out heat as she never mention she had a male either,the first 7 egg have go off, but iam more concern for the female, i don't think it will be a good to wait,

I don't think it would be good to wait.
But ouir opinions don't matter when it comes to the life of a snake, let the experts decide. Call your vet and ask his opinion ASAP!

I don't think that any of us could give a definite, no-risk answer in this situation. Because of the possibility of your snake becoming or being egg-bound, I would take your snake to a herp vet immediately. It's better to be safe than sorry.

i took the female to my vet ,and waiting for the vet she decideed to lay them in her box whislt we waited, the first egg out was like a golf ball rock hard next 6 wre all soft
.the eggs may not survie but at least my new found friend will

Wonderful news!!! It could be that the stimulation of being carried somewhere in a box led to her laying the rest of the eggs.

And whether or not the eggs survive and hatch, the bonding experience of having cared for your corn and getting her through a tough spot will be a warm experience you'll remember forever. You are an especially caring person to adopt a corn in such a predicament.

Congratulations on your new corn! Let us know what happens with the eggs--I'm curious to see if having been retained for so long will have an effect on their outcome.

most of the eggs have gone off,1 of the last is still soft shelled and 2 are white but don't look that good, so will have to see,

do you think this female should be bred from again ???
she difinately needs building back up

I think it's a good idea for any corn to only be gravid once a season normally, although some very large, vigorous females can double clutch without apparent problems. Synthesizing all of that new protein and other components for the corn embryos, yolks and shells will significantly deplete energy stores, as well as somewhat diverting her internal biological machinery from the normal maintenance of her own body. This is true in humans as well as animals.

In your case, your corn was "quasi-egg-bound" for about a week. Even though all the eggs came out naturally in the *end*, it must still have been a lot of extra stress on her.

And that's not to mention the fact that she's now in a new environment [with a more dedicated caretaker!], and any such change must also be somewhat stressful.

Thus, there would seem to be numerous reasons to delay breeding until next season. Once built back up with a good diet, and assuming that no other medical problems occur, she'll probably do fine next year.

I'd like to hear what others on the forum think about all of this. I'm relatively new at the breeding and egg side of snakes, and I learn a lot here.

Very good news!! At least all the eggs are out of her now. Maybe better luck next year. Don't worry, you'll success sooner or later.

My hypo didn't even breed this year.....she thought that the 'boys' were unattractive I guess...hahah

just to let everyone know the last remaning eggs now perish,and the femalehas now eaten her first meal,thanks again for your help
