Thermometer/humidity measure thing (LOL)

Ok I have been eyeballing the combo thermometer and humidity measuring thing (I don't know what its called LOL) its with all the fancy thermometers near the screen windows and yard sale signs in our walmart. You are supposed to mount it on your wall but I don't see any where a snake can get stuck on it. I am wondering if I wrap it in plasic wrap or something to keep poo off it can I use it?

It says they do not carry it at stores but I have seen it at mine. Recently.

Anyway, I figured I should ask what you guys thought because I can't shop online at this time and it is the only way I'd be able to get a reptile specific one. Thanks for your help guys!

I'm just curious (because I need a few new thermometers soon), does that have a probe on it? I didn't see anything that stated that it did.

So it looks like you'd be able to just use the stand - which is what I do.

The humidity thing is a hygrometer. The one you posted is an indoor unit, which means that it has both the thermometer and hygrometer built in to the unit, with no external probes. It's most likely made to mount with double-sided tape or a screw in the wall.

We had all sorts of thermometers, hygrometers, and combo units in the enclosure for our Brazilian rainbow boa. They require higher humidity than is usually possible in our house, so we wanted to know what we were giving it. None of the digital ones worked very well or very long. We ended up with a cheap dial-type hygrometer double-sided-taped to one wall and a probe thermometer from Radio Shack. We move the probe from tank to tank to see how everybody's temp is doing.

Some people will probably disagree with me on this, but in my experience it isn't really necessary to know the in-enclosure humidity for corn snakes. Whatever you have in the house, boosted by a spritz or two of water per day, will likely keep things humid enough. If the house gets really dry in the winter (so that static electricity zaps you hard every time you touch a doorknob), add a spritz. Not terribly scientific, but it works!

Oh, I just posted a thread on this same product. So, it is not an ideal tool for a tank? I really couldn't draw any conclusion from this.

Radio shack for the probe thermometer? I hadn't thought to check there. Will look on Monday when I'm that way. If they don't have one at ours I'll probably try this thing since it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Thanks guys!

I've read several opinions about those strip thermometers being very inaccurate, but maybe someone else knows otherwise. Your best option is a digital thermometer w/ probe -- the one that ceduke suggested, for example, would probably work just fine. Also, while you should have a thermometer on both sides of the enclosure (to measure the warm side and cool side), you do not need two hygrometers, at least from what I've researched. One hygrometer should measure the general humidity of the entire enclosure.

No, it doesn't measure belly heat. I guess you could if you stuck it to the floor, but they aren't really accurate. Why not spend the extra five dollars for a decent one with a probe??

What is the importance of having a probe? I don't know what that's used for. >.<

You stick the probe on the spot you want to measure the temperature of, and it tells you the temperature of that spot. I have one that I use for all of my snakes' tubs when I want to double-check that the thermostat is doing what it should.

Since you want to measure the temperature on the bottom of the tub/tank, it's an easy way to do it.
