Hi - hoping somebody can recommend a cage for me. I am interested in a new cage for my 9 year old, 5 foot male. First, I want it to look like furniture, not an ugly lab cage or pet store rack type of cage. Second, I want it to be extremely secure for escape artist snakes, and I will need a lock to keep my toddler from opening the door.

I am fine with a combo cage/stand or just a cage that can go on a table from Ikea or whatever. I'm looking for something 48x24x24 with an internal ceramic socket. Ideally a wood cage.

I've been looking at Majestic, but they sure are expensive... anybody have another suggestion?

It would take some luck for finding one but check craigs list or some garage sales for an armoire or book case with glass doors and then do some handy man modifying to close off any escape routes. Cut some holes in the top staple gun some screen with and put on the lights and you should be good to go. Also staple in some linoleum on the bottom and up the edges a bit before putting in the bedding material.

boaphile, animal plastics, proline. theres tons of choices out there for manufactured caging. also theres always the diy homemade job. can get some nice lumber, stain it nice, seal it. make any kind of door you want, how you want it to look also. if you want it to look like furniture homemade is the way to go. if not then your gonna pay out the rear for a nice furniture looking cage.

Wow, Jenne! I never heard of these before. I'm probably gonna have to get something along these lines for my ever growing VBB.

Thanks for posting these links!!!

No problem, Fred! Glad to help! Beeger Boxes comes to the White Plains show, and I stumbled upon Herp Houses while on Reptile Geeks.

Ah nice, I went to those web sites and they are perfect for what ive been looking for. We are getting a Atheris squamigera Bush Viper and I wanted something with a key lock. Everything else ive looked at was just waaaaaaaaaaaay to pricey. This is perfect!. That and they have enclosures large enough for the rainbow boa that will be moving in this winter.

I just have one question about the housing units at both Herp Houses and Beeger Boxes, maybe I did not review the sites well enough but I was unable to find a way to use a UTH with them for the belly heat the snakes need? I can not imagine that UTH's (at least not the Exoterra or Zoomed ones I have could get hot enough to heat through the wood. Nor do I see a way to put them inside and get the cord out to plug it in? Any clues about this? To me it looks like some modifications would need to be made.

With Beeger, I am not sure, you may have to use a radiant heat panel or something similiar. But herp houses actually have a glass panel on the bottom which you can use to attach the uth for heat.

Thanks for all the comments so far. Those are some good sites to start with. I can barely hammer a nail so any DIY mods are totally out of the question for me.

One of the things I really wanted has been an internal heat source, just because external lights/bulbs sitting on top look ugly. Right now my cage has internal wires so I can put in a ceramic heater in the inside corner, in a protected wire cage so the snake doesn't burn himself. But this seems pretty unusual... it looks like most internal sources would be UTH, correct? Those make me nervous though... I once had an old Neodesha cage with a UTH that nearly set my carpet on fire.

By the way, can anybody recommend http://www.customwoodreptilecages.com/
