If I were you I'd put the light at one end and not in the middle, and I would put a guard around it. It WILL burn the snake if he manage to touch it.

Who cares? Not making another hole is not more important then the snake not burning itself. Buy another lid. Snakes have often wrapped themselves around lights, and fried.

Also you haven't created a gradient. ALL reptiles need a heat gradient. By placing the light in the middle your snake is not being given a cool and warm end. It needs a spectrum of different temps to live and be healthy. I would buy a new lid and get a light that goes on top of it to one side.

cheers for the info, is there any way i could plug a hole? as i can rather easily get 1 cut...it would just be a case of effectively plugging the other 1.
cheers dan

Yes

This ought to work...
Recently I plugged a hole in a glass bottom simply by hot-glueing a piece of hard plastic. The hot glue is sturdy enough and will not break down. It should adhere to wood (is that what your top is made of?).

If your lid is screen, then you can buy a small piece remnant screen from somewhere, and sew it over the old hole.

My two cents

I'd add a nice branch and lose the "lizard lounge" hammock. And I'd opt for under tank heating, if it's availible and within your price range. But you know what? That corn is living in better conditions than 90% of those out there! Good job. :) The hides in each end are a good idea, and it's clear you care about the animal. That's the most important thing. You're the man! ;)

Nice!!

My viv' looks the same, except kinda' with the changes recomended. I use under tank heeting and a heat lamp on the outside only to raise ambient temperature (here in Chicagoland it gets pretty cold at night!). This pic' gives you the idea. Yours looks very good, but you need to get that bulb outside your tank.

neva have done that never will do that....too much hastle i would rather buy a guard....(im actually on the look out for 1 but cant seem to find 1) not only do i need a new lamp but i need a new screen lid, besides the light adds most of the heat to my tank, it wouldnt really do that outside....would it?

Yes...it will provide the needed heat on the outside! It is much safer for your snake on the outside as well. Guards don't always keep the snake away from the light either! You wouldn't believe how many burnt snakes I have seen come into the clinic I work at. I don't understand why you are unwilling to take the advice of all of the experienced people on this site. That really confuses me...

If I knew I was doing something that could harm any of my snakes, I would change it immediately! I suggest that if you care about your snakes, you should do the same.

i get what you are saying, but you dont really know my snake,
1. she is never out of her hide, i think the only time she willingly comes out is to either shed her skin or move to the other hide lol.
2.she isnt really a climbing snake so she wouldnt know hot to get to it lol
3. where can i get a mesh lid in the uk thats the right size then?

Have you ever considered the fact that maybe your snake doesn't come out because her environment isn't satisfactory? And you should be able to get some screen at any hardware type store...simply sew a patch of screen over the hole in the lid you have now.

You stated before that it was simply too much hassle to move the light. I honestly think that if aren't willing to go through the "hassle" of providing a healthy environment to your snake, then maybe you shouldn't have one.

I am not trying to mean, but you are responsible for a life...and you need to take care of it...hassle or not!

fair enough it may be unsatisfactory....how? please tell me how i can make it satisfactory as this was a post asking how i can do that...

You have a heat mat under the tank, that should do for the heat needed for the snake to digest. To take the temp lay the thermometer ON the substrate over the heat mat.

How warm is your room that you have your viv in? If it is 70-80 f you dont need the bulb....... Take the bulb out leave the bulb holder in the hole to PLUG it. (remove the cable and plug from the holder to be safe).

...................simple....:)

Need anything else just ask no Question is silly if you are not sure of the answer.:D

its winter here, so my room tends to be quite cold.
the problem is, even though my room is as quite a steady temp, the temp in my tank varies from 70-84 is that healthy?
im going to get a thermostat as soon as i can afford 1 to hopefully sort that problem out. is there anything i can do in the mean time?
