The best thermostats/rheostats and UTHs?

Daenerys

Mother of Dragons
Okay so I am looking into getting these things for my snake in the next couple of weeks. I will finally have my car on the 10th of October so I will be able to go to some stores to see what I can find. I know I will probably end up having to turn to ordering something offline but I like to avoid that if I can.

So what do you guys use for a thermostat/rheostat and UTH that works really well? If at all possible I would like to get something that doesn't cost a whole lot of money as I don't have a job right now. I have money, I am just trying not to spend too much as I have to pay for college right now as well.

that rheostat will not get that heat pad to a low enough temperature. i have tried it on all of mine from 10g size to 55g size heat pads and it got the lowest of 93f. might be ok for some. but not for a corn. i recommend if your going with a dimmer/rheostat to get one from home depot/lowes or likewise store. they work a lot better. but youll also need a temp gun, or probe thermometer to fine tune or dial in the proper heat. and check it often and keep it adjusted. theres some cheaper thermostats that work good. check out the beanfarm. they have some good deals and a good collection to look at.

This is the dimmer I use.

This is the UTH I use.

I've been using them for over a year now, and haven't had a problem. I hear the Herpstat thermostats work really well. I believe you can find them at Beanfarm.com. Good luck! :)

I use both the ZooMed and the ExoTerra Desert UTHs. I have had equal numbers of both (one or two) fail (off). The ExoTerras have big round feet that I really like. The ZooMeds are relatively easy to remove if you have to, the ExoTerras are VERY difficult to remove after a couple years.

I have all Herpstat thermostats except one. Yes, $125 seems super-expensive. I am running seven, I think, if not more, and have not had a single problem ever. I remembered again yesterday why I like them so much. I bought a snake I hadn't planned on, and needed another set-up fast, and FORGOT to buy a UTH, so had to buy it on the way to pick up the snake (it's way cheaper to find on on eBay!!) and when I got home with the snake and the UTH I just plugged it into the Herpstat, set the stat to 84 and forgot about it. No dialing it in for hours or even days.

Big Apple Herp sells a nice two-probed digital thermometer. Those are nice because you can see at a glance what is going on at your snakes house, allowing you to catch temperature problems such as a failed UTH immediately.

Umm....I don't think I can spend that much on a rheostat. I think I will try the light dimmer thingy from Lowes. I can walk there from my house. And I saw that UTH at the pet store but the store employee I talked to about it said it wasn't good for corns. Ah well.

You have to realize that most pet store employees don't know anything about reptiles. Their goal is to sell you stuff. CS.com doesn't have an agenda...it's pure, unadulterated helpfulness. ;)

PS. I've never used unadulterated in a sentence before...did I even use it correctly?

Well then this guy was a pretty bad employee because he talked me out of buying two things because he said my corn snake didn't need them.

Anyways I think I will see what Petco next to my house has for UTHs and I will get the dimmer cord from Lowes, then I'll just need a thermometer thingy that measures the substrate....right?

The thermometer doesn't have to be any more exotic than this $9 one from Petco, since you're headed that way anyway:

The Petco website also shows a ZooMed equivalent for $6.

Drop the probe to the bottom of the enclosure, under the substrate and on top of the UTH. That way you know your snake won't get scorched when he burrows. We also have an infrared thermometer-gun thingy, but they're expensive.
