Newbie with heat/light questions

How cold can I let my tank get? Can I turn the light off at night if the temp drops close to 60? Is my humidity too low?

I'm new to corn snakes (all snakes actually) and need some answers about heating and lighting issues.

I have a 13-inch corn in a 10-gallon tank with an UTH on one side and a regular 100 watt bulb overhead. We have a silk plant on the warm side and aspen bedding. I use foil over part of the screen top as needed to keep the temperature about 80.

But my house in New York state is chilly this time of year . I turn the house heat down to save on utility bills and I have to leave the light on all night over the tank to keep it warm. But the tank is next to my 7-year-old son's bed and I don't want to leave the bright light on all night.

I plan to get a 100 watt red bulb so it's not such bright light, but I'm having trouble finding one around here. The humidity seems pretty low, close to 20 %, but it gets up to about 30 % after I mist the tank well, but never any higher. I put a small water bowl on the warm side of the tank but haven't seen much improvement.

The snake has some skin flakes, but otherwise seems OK. Is that due to low humidity? I'll be doing the first feeding (since I've had it ) this evening.

Thanks.

hi, first of all.. you need to move the water bowl to the "cool" side of the tank. second..snakes need belly temps not air temps. using a UTH and a rheostat or thermostat is fine. also a 30 watt red bulb is plenty for viewing at night and additional "air temp" heat. if you cover half the tank top that should also raise your humidity. hope this helps and i'm sure others will add to this. PS...love the user name!!
