well there are many diff aspects of having a cat and npot having a cat around with ur snake. i have a cat who loves to sit and look at the tank everytime my yearling comes out. and trys to get5 into the tank. then again my snake also lieks to tease him. he goes and sit right in front for the cat to claw and sratch at the tank... i try not to get them near eachother. so its actully up to u

We have a cat that lives happily along with snakes and lizards, even birds! Her biggest enemies are the 3 80+ lb dogs running around here! I'd suppose it'd depend on the upbringing and combined with the nature of the cat as well.
Our cat does go outside and hunts anything and everything, such as cats should...IMO...but when she is inside, she pays to mind to any other critters.

I have 2 cats. One of them is especially interested in my snakes, but she isn't allowed to torment them...the door to the room where the snakes are kept is closed at all times unless I am working in the room. If I have one of the snakes out, then the cats will watch it. If given the opportunity, I am sure the cats would try to hunt the snakes. It is what a cat does...
That being said, I think that a person can have other animals as well as their snakes (cats included). It is just very important to realize that it is YOUR responsibility to make certain that all of the animals in your care are taken care of...that includes protecting them. Simply don't give the cat an opportunity to get to your snake, and you should be fine.
One of the biggest things to be certain of is that you have an escape-proof, cat-proof enclosure for your snake. As long as your snake is inside, then all is well. If your snake can escape or the cat can get in, then you will probably end up with a dead snake.
That being said, I think that a person can have other animals as well as their snakes (cats included). It is just very important to realize that it is YOUR responsibility to make certain that all of the animals in your care are taken care of...that includes protecting them. Simply don't give the cat an opportunity to get to your snake, and you should be fine.

heres my story....
a few years back (2-3-4) i had a baby garter snake, placid lil snake, great. i also had a cat. the cat would sit at the vi for ages just watching. then 1 day i got home to find the cat downstairs with the snake in its mouth. the snake was alive, but defenceless. i managed to get the snake off the cat (nosey job) and took it back into its viv. it didnt eat again. im not sure if it was the stress, or it was damaged internally, but my snake never ate a meal again, tried everything, he just hid away all the time.
that cat since got run over about 4 months ago. we got a kitten, which i may add is MAD, you are not safe in the same room as it lol. but i havent dared let the cat any way near this snake. but 1 day wen my corn shed its skin, i left it out to dry.... the kitten attacked the shedded skin, scredded it. so this kitten isnt even gonna get a look at my snake. i am getting a royal and using a front opening tank this time. the first thing on my items list is a cage lock.

I have 4 cats and have always had cats around. My cats are not allowed in the snake room. I have 3 cages in the living room but they are escape proof and cat proof. I have never lost a snake to my cats but had one close call:duck:

I have a cat that very much enjoys sneaking on to the top of my snake's cage and staring down at her while i am out of the room. My snake (Daphne) isn't bothered in the least. i have watched them go nose to nose through the steel mesh of her cage lid before.
i find the most important consideration in keeping a predator and a prey in the same household is a strong cage lid! i had my lid specially built for just that reason. Cats are crafty and even if you keep your snakes and your cat in seperate rooms, i'll bet the cats still find a way into the snakes room once in a while. it is probablly best to cat-proof your cage even if they are seperated. Even though i have had minimal problems, i try not to encourage (or even permit) too much interaction just to be safe

It definitely depends on the temperment of the cats. I have 2. They both enjoy staring at the snakes from behind glass/plastic, and the snakes seem fine with that. One of the cats is not allowed near them when they are out of the cage. I just don't trust her with them. The other cat I trust a lot more. She'll sniff them and even let them crawl around on her (with supervision of course). She's been trained/conditioned since she was a kitten to stop moving and settle down whenever I have a hand on her back (yeah, she's not a cat, we call her "puppy-cat"), so she'll just lay there with a snake on her head and not budge. I wouldn't try that in a million years with my "normal" cat LOL. Mostly as long as the snakes don't escape and you keep an eye on everything when you get the snakes out they should be ok.

I totally agree. I have three cats, and they've always been allowed in my snake room (as long as I'm in there too). Two of the cats act completely uninterested in the snakes. I can even hold a snake up to them, and they just scrunch up their faces and back away. If a hatchling were to get loose, however, those same "uninterested" cats would turn into great hunters and actually did some damage to an escapee many, many years ago.
My third cat is a different story altogether. She will sit for hours staring into the cages, and wouldn't hesitate to "play" with any snake within her reach regardless of size. She's a troublemaker, and likes to steal things. Once I had several hatchlings in deli cups sitting on the floor in my snake room (I was packing them up to take to a store). The cat zipped into the room, latched onto the edge of the cup, and zipped back out with the cup in her mouth. What a site! I was torn between scolding her and cracking up.
