My first rack!

Taste the Rainbow
Yep, after a year of pondering and planning I finally got off my bum and made one! :D I used a bunch of scrap pieces of wood from my shop's last show. I took Cynthia's design and made it taller basically. (Thanks for all your help!!!) Each shelf is 27x19x6.5 on the inside. It holds 8 - 40 quart sterilite tubs. The sides and shelves are 3/4 ply and the back is 1/4 ply. I drilled 1" holes in the back for when I add flexwatt to it, I already have the thermostat. (Anyone have a beginners guide on how to? Or any tips?) I put strips of 2x6 on the bottom to prop it off the ground, makes it easier to pick up to move and keeps out any drafts. It's still a work in progress, but here's some pictures anyways. I'm too excited to wait until it's done. :D

Haha! Yeah, I know. It's more of a 'build it now so I can save up money for 2010 hatchlings.. (I'm telling myself I can't buy any yet so I don't have to build another rack before fall.)

w00t! It looks awesome! I'm glad that my plans were able to help your design. :D I don't really see any necessary improvements at first glance. You're probably just going to have to trouble-shoot as time goes on (basically, just as I'm doing with mine. LOL!).

I saw your other thread asking about Flexwatt. Sorry, having not used that yet, I'm not much help at all in that department! For what it's worth, I will say that I've had very good luck ordering other supplies from Reptile Basics. Good luck! When I add more snakes and need to switch to Flexwatt, I'll probably be coming to you for advice, as I know you'll have it all figured out by then. ;)

Thanks! AJ and I carried the beast upstairs so it's in its proper spot finally. Lol.

I'm slowly figuring out the flexwatt. I'm thinking an 11" piece per shelf would be good. Ordering from Reptile Basics is probably what I'm going to do too, I've heard many good things about them. Not sure when I'm gonna order it though. I'd hate to wire all eight shelves when I only have two snakes to put into the rack. For now I'm just in ponder mode. >.<

Great job Bree, that is the next thing my son needs to build me!!! Currently he says he is about 1/2 to 3/4 done my snake shelf for the 30 gallon long tanks, then I will have to pick it up from his school. I am so impatiently waiting!!!

Waiting for tubs.

Placed my order for a set of 6 tubs online on the 7th and I'm still waiting. Tracking says it should, hopefully, be in tomorrow. Once the tubs are in the next step will be heat tape.

Update!

Tubs came in on Monday (the 24th) and today I decided to move Aly and Charlie in after their dinner tonight (after melting 576 holes in the tubs). I haven't ordered the heat tape yet because I don't need it. I'm just using their heat pads on a thermostat until I need to buy the tape. Spare tubs are stacked on top so I can use the other shelves for storage (like my scale, tongs, temp gun, feeding bins, extra aspen, newspaper, etc.) I need more plants for their tubs so they feel more secure. Here's the new setup! :D
