Saw my first black rat snakes of the year

I had my first day of work at King's Mountain National Military Park today and they wanted me to walk the hiking trail, just to get to know the park. I saw a couple of five-lined skinks under a bridge, and I saw an eastern box turtle crossing a fire road, but toward the end of my hike I got a real treat: two four-foot black rat snakes were mating in the middle of the trail! They stopped when I approached but I took a seat on the side of the trail about 10 feet away and they just went at it. I was so sad that I didn't have a camera on me because it was really cool. I've never seen snakes mating before. I talked to some of the maintenance guys after and they said there are also copperheads and timber rattlers on the park so I'm looking forward to seeing those guys this summer too.

I went hiking this weekend too. It was awesome.. I didn't see nearly the amount of wildlife you did, but I was lucky enough to catch an adolescent Gopher snake on the road headed back into town. I will post pic's in my own thread later when I have access to them, so I don't hijack yours...lol
You were lucky to see those rats, I would love to see some out here...

I think in the next couple of weeks I am going to go out to White Sands National Monument and do some hiking on the dunes and I hope to see some snakes out there too.

i went to a local park last weekend so look for snakes. All I found were bugs and spiders. May go again this coming weekend, earliler in the day to look for baskers.
