I know some of you love the Carpet Pythons as well.....enjoy :)

Karma hatched last year on my 40th birthday :) I'm fairly certain Karma is a female, but I'm not 100% sure.
I got Karma when she was just 3 weeks old. She bit the guy I got her from when he tried popping her. So while she was latched onto his thumb, I popped her.
I'll get some updated pic of her fairly soon.

She was just 19 grams when I got her, & took a long time get get eating. She even dropped a couple grams in the beginning. I was worried about her, but she eventually started eating & has been a fairly good eater ever since. She's about due for another weight, but the last time I weighed her, was 2.5 months ago, at 63 grams.

Next is Tyr, my Jungle Carpet male. I took him in as a foster/possible keeper, when someone couldn't care for her snakes after losing her job. I knew right away that I wanted him to stay. He's got a fabulous temperment & I have used him to helped a friend who has had a snake phobia.

I love these creatures! I Had one but had to sell him due to me moving and rearranging stuff. Tough choice though :( Karma changed more then I would have expected, I though the brownish pattern would have gotten more red or lighter, not black?

Ooooo.... your guys are pretty! So that's the boy who came with the girl I'm taking home? He's handsome. Although, I must admit, I don't think I've ever seen a carpet python who wasn't :-).

I think the insides of her bands will lighten up, but I'm not sure.

Thank you Irish :)
Yes, that is the one I was talking about. They did not come from the same breeder, but I got them both from the same person. (She got Tyr from CL before I got him.)

Here's a pic of Karma that I took today. I think she's pre-shed. Her shed process is so much longer than the corns.

Next is Daray. He's an '09 IJ Carpet Python. He's poss het Granite. I have a female from the same pair, that is a '10 baby. I hope to prove out the Granite.

Daray has a bit of a 'tude, can you tell?

Lol, I recognize that pose from trying to move around my baby boa last night, to see if he'd shed yet. He was not amused. XD Your carpets are beautiful, hopefully I'll have one this fall.

Thanks, but I do have a breeder in mind. Only problem is the snake would need to be shipped and I live in Texas. Gotta wait for shipping weather.

That female 'o mine is pretty! She's an '07, right? At that age, will the inside of her black bands lighten up, or will they stay pretty much pure black?

How much longer IS their shedding process than that of a corn snake? I've noticed that my boas aren't that much longer, but my BP takes forever to shed. The GTP has shed once.

Thanks! Temperment varies, jsut like in Corns. More of an individual thing. I have heard that Jungles tend to have the worse temperments, but mine has a great temperment. A couple of my IJ's are pretty bitey, but they're still young. My baby Diamond cross & Coastal have both been fine so far.

Tahlaia is an '09, from what I'm told. She's likely a mix of some sort, so I don't know how she will turn out.
Each snake is different, I think. She is blue-ish now, appears to be getting clear. I think she will probably shed within the next week or so.

LOL ah yes, but this addiction is more limited by space. :)
I have 3 IJ's, an IJ Jag, a Jungle, a Coastal & a Diamond integrade. I wanted a baby female Jungle this year, from the girl who got me into snakes, but her Jungles are not cooperating...no babies this year.

This same friend is working on getting me into GTP's as well. :) I'll likely end up with one of her retired breeders at some point.

LOL-yeah. I got Karma last July(when she was 3 weeks old),then two IJ's in August, took in the Jungle & IJ cross(that Irish is getting) when someone couldn't care for them anymore in October, then the IJ Jag in January, & I was only planning on the Coastal female, & was waiting for the right shipping temps, & made the mistake of looking at Luke's (Snell) babies again & added the Diamond integrade, & got them in April. The Jungle is the only one big enough for a full size cage right now. The rest are babies/young.

Spotted Pythons are cute, but I doubt I will be adding them. The next species I plan to get is the GTP. I don't plan on breeding them, & I will likely only get one. (Unless my friend Julie has her way. LOL)

From what I'm told, they are not as mean as people say they are. If you look up Rocky Gravely on iHerp, I'm hoping to get a baby that looks like Malachite or Flint.....love, love, love them!!

Oh, but you really should get into Carpets :)
They are awesome! My friend who got me into snakes in the first place, has been working on me to get a GTP. She says they're the ultimate snake. I will reserve my opinion on that until I actually have one. LOL
Carpets, are hands down, my favorite snake. I love their dragon-like heads, & the majority of them have fabulous personalities!
If you're looking for smaller snakes, IJ's tend to stay failry small. The first pic on this page, is of Karma's parents.

MysticExotics

I should add that some bloodlines do get quite big. I have some friends that had a male & a female IJ that were believed to be one fof the first wild caught IJ's or one of the first captive born. They were both about 16yrs old & both were huge! They were gorgeous (they both passed away not too long ago).

My Coastal female is from smaller bloodlines, which is good, because I now live in a city that does not allow snakes longer than 10ft.

MysticExotics
07-07-2011, 10:09 PM
I won't be breeding Carpets anytime soon. I will be pairing Jezanna & Daray (both are possible het Granite) & I just saw a Jungle Jag(very cool!) , & will probably pair Aradia with Tyr when she's big enough. It will be a few years before my girls are ready to breed.

Ok now I'm going to have to start doing my homework on carpets. Nothing can beat the beauty of corns to me but personality wise I'm really digging the 2 pythons that I have so far. Corns are like the jittery crackheads of the snake world while pythons are more like laid back potheads. Lol!

MysticExotics
07-08-2011, 12:02 AM
My Jungle eats med rats right now. He might grow big enough to eat large rats. I imagine that large rats are *generally* the prey size that they eat (or a couple rats if they get huge).

GTP should not be handled until they are past a year old... Their spines are very easy to damage so any handling needs to be careful and gentle...
And a year old snake that has never been handled can be quite eventful when you have to be careful at the same time... LOL

TBH... I prefer Carpets.....
GTP are quite boring... They make you panic with their vivs and husbandry... Panic with their food (you haven't had poop questions until you have had a GTP).. Just generally on tenter hooks all the time...
Carpets on the other hand are like nails... User friendly and it's hard to get things wrong... Plus they sit like a GTP, so win win..... JMHO.

solo1979
07-08-2011, 08:28 AM
Very cool! My can't be handled much statement was in regards to hurting their spine although I can imagine that a snake who wasn't handled much in their first year may not be the friendliest.

MysticExotics
07-15-2011, 07:51 PM
I somehow missed these last two responses...sorry.

I have a feeling that I too, will prefer the Carpets, even after I (someday) get a GTP.
I kinda figured I would end up getting one "token" GTP & it would be a display snake.
We shall see.

I would love, love, love one that looks like Rocky Gravely's "Flint"!!

So apparently I'm a good/bad influence afterall...you'll be getting your first (& second?) Carpet in the near future. ;)

I had a couple of the babies out today, to weight them & decided to take a couple outside for mini photoshoots.

First is Jezanna, my 2010 female IJ. She's not so social. LOL
Next is Aradia, half-sister to Jezanna (same sire), my 2010 75% IJ Jag.
Both of these girls are from a local breeder. Their sire is 100% het for Granite. I have a 2009 male IJ from the same parents as Jezanna, & I'll be trying for some Granite IJ's down the road.

The last three pics are of Talon, my 2010 Diamond Integrade. I think he's got some Jungle too. He's getting more yellow & I cannot wait to see how he grows up!

Here is Zaria, my 2010 Coastal Carpet. She & Talon came from Luke Snell (Blueisoa on iHerp) & I could not be happier with these babies! They are great eaters, great personalities & gorgeous!!

Zaria comes from a double sire clutch. Luke paired a Coastal Jag female with a Red Jag Sib male & a Striped Coastal male.
I loved her markings from the moment I saw her.

Zaria loves to climb & decided to try out being a hair accessory for me for a bit today. :)

Guess I need to post some pictures too. Ummmm....... I picked up a baby IJ girl today. She is about to shed some isn't looking her best but so far is a really sweet girl. She's already got some blushing (that's what it's called right?) going on but I'm not sure a photo shoot would do her justice right now. The breeder I picked up this girl from had lots of adult IJs and all were a nice manageable size. I paid $75 which I thought seemed decent. Another guy had some for $65 but they looked sickly. I'm still getting my 2 boys from Luke next month at Tinley. Then I'm done, I swear!

If I had to choose a favorite of your clan it would be Zaria. I'm excited to be getting her baby brother/half brother.

My other pick ups for the day were a hypo lav that Terri helped me snag from the rodent selling guy, a gorgeous ultra anery produced by Terri and the brightest pastel male ball python I've ever seen. All while staying within my snake allowance/budget! Plus some supplies and feeders. Today was a good day!

I'm so glad that you're getting two from Luke! You will *love* them! (You must post lots of pics when you get them!) :)

She came from Jennifer Holland of Boa Cabana. I said I wanted a female because I've already got 2 males on hold. Her husband asked which breeder and when I said Luke Snell he was like oh I know Luke and he's great! :)

I did snap a few pix before putting her away. Let's see if any of them look good.

Tell me about it! I'm about to cave on a gorgeous female IJ that a local (OR) girl has. I wasn't planning on anymore IJ's, but this girl breeds for lighter IJ's & they're gorgeous!

Pretty sure I'm in love. They're beautiful!!!

The brat sibs are nasty even when out. I had some mini allergic reaction after the girl tagged me. First I had little punctures, then it healed, then maybe a week after that I had these little bumps in the exact location of the punctures. I should probably just spend some more time with them to see if it helps. Of course, since they are nasty, they have the absolute best feeding response in the entire house!

solo1979
02-27-2012, 03:10 PM
I would like a female from that clutch, but may have not asked earlier enough. We'll see. My original plan was going to be to pair Lion-O with Cheetara, but there's a good chance I may go a different direction with her first pairing. I noticed a few days ago that the Bell X PC IJ from Erin is showing a broken, but pretty decent stripe (take a peek at his most recent iherp pic). The Boa Cabanas seem to be het for striping, with it showing when some of the babies are paired together. So, I may put her with the Bell X PC boy first to see if any of the kids show stripes. And if they do........YUMMMM!

MysticExotics

I love the stripey ones! :)
I did see the stripe on the BellxPC, very nice!
Did you see the Ivory female that Ed posted on MP? She's from Nick & is pretty stripey. I hope she produces this year, I'll be watching for a nice, light female, to hopefully pair with my Ivory male down the road. If not, I'll likely see what Nick produces next, in the way of Ivory.

I went to the Portland Metro Expo yesterday, & I had planned on bringing home just the female Ivory Jungle, produced by Nick Mutton, but it didn't exactly work out that way.

I got there about 30 minutes after doors opened & made my way to Nick's booth to pick up my girl & visit with Nick. Well, before I left, I asked about his WC outcross lines, (het Granite), & he only had one, a little male. I immediately was drawn to him, he's got some really cool banding that you don't normally see in IJ's. I forgot to ask the % of outcrossed blood on him.
He's in shed, but I really think he's going to be quite stunning when he sheds.

Later, shortly before they started closing up, I went back over to talk to Nick, & he was really trying to get me to take home a Coastal or two. He has some really nice once, & I was briefly tempted by a particular Carmel Coastal female, but I decided that would be starting a whole new project & decided not to do it.
So he asked what I was interested in. I told him the Granites. That's a project I have wanted to work towards since I got one of my first IJ's who is poss het for Granite.
He had two Granite females & I really liked one that almost looks Zebra-ish. We worked out a deal & she came home with me!! I'm still in shock that I have a Granite! She is 25% WC outcross.

I'm super stoked about these new additions, & I really look forward to watching them grow up!

He had two Zebra females that were going to someone else (a guy that helps him out at shows & such) & Zebra's are next on my must have list. He had a hatchling from this eyar, & a juvie female. OMG So pretty!

I was gonna ask...yours is one form this year that has wc outcross lines?
I think he has at least two het Granite clutches, one small clutch is out of a WC outcross.

Yeah hes from the WC outcross lines. He told me one of the parents was 100% WC import. He said he was bringing some to the show. So must be it! He said it was a very small clutch.

Just got more lineage info from Nick. My het Granite male & the Granite female share the same sire.

For the het Granite male:
Dam: 50% ph Granite female [Grandsire: het male-Precision Reptiles X Granddam: WC female imported by Strictly Reptiles about 2007]
Sire:Granite (original Piet Nuyen line-Denmark)

For my Granite female:
Dam: het female (Paul Harris) [Grandsire: original line Granite X WC Granddam] Sire:Granite (original Piet Nuyen line-Denmark)

That must leave you smiling having seen that

Oh my, so much so! I'm getting a third baby from Nick, a het Granite female, from 50% WC outcross lines, (the other two are 25% WC outcross). All three of these Granite gened babies are from separate lines, so that's an even bigger bonus!
This het female is one of three females in the clutch. One is likely sold, he's keeping one & I get one of them. He'll send pics in the near future. I get to pick her up at the October show.

*Angela, I think your boy is actually a sibling to this female I'm getting, if your boy is 50% WC outcross. My het Granite male & my Granite girl are both 25%.

Nick has 5 clutches of Granite/het Granite's this year, 4 of them have some sort of unrelated blood in them.

I cannot tell you how excited I am to work on these Granite projects down the road!!

I have a poss het Granite female from a local breeder, that might be big enough to breed next year, if my het Granite male is big enough by then as well.

My poss het Granite Jag female is in NC right now, growing up, & when she's ready (probably 2014) she'll be paired with one of two outstanding Granite males that my friend has. Hopefully, she'll prove out het Granite, & maybe get some Granite Jags.

I'll be posting lots of progression pics of these babies :)

Nick is great to deal with, he's got an insane amount of knowledge when it comes to Morelia, & he's really easy to work with!

Now, if I can get out of the October show with *just* my female het Granite, & not give in to any more, that will be a feat, for sure! LOL

I got the CP book at Daytona and Im just starting it. Its a big book! But should be fun/educational to read. I really enjoyed chatting with Nick too. I was very happy with the transaction. Now for it to cool down enough to ship.

How many carpets do you have now?

Awesome! It's a great book! I need to remember to take mine to have Nick autograph one of these days.

Total (inluding those not in house at the moment) = 20
My poss het Granite IJ Jag is on loan to a friend, then there's the female I will be picking up from Nick, three babies that I'm waiting on shipping from Luke Snell (another fabulous IJ breeder), two of those babies are poss het Granite (I'm waiting on a couple females in one clutch to shed, so I can pick one out-I've already picked out the male from one clutch (got 2nd pick) & decided to add one of the ph male siblings to the female I'll be getting, & I've already picked him out. Once I pick out a female, & the weather cools a bit more, those three will ship.

I will be getting a JCP female from my friend who has my IJ Jag. I've been waiting for a female baby from this particular female of hers since last year. She didn't produce last year, & then psyched us out this year, & dropped eggs out of the blue. I'm waiting for babies to shed, & then figure out which once I can chose from. She knows I like stripey/wacky patterns, so I should get something pretty cool.

My focus has become the IJ's & JCP's, & I look forward to working with those projects.

More of my Granite project IJ's.
I put dibs on a baby out of a beautiful IJ produced by Luke Snell (Morelia in Wonderland), a couple years ago. Well this year was the year. He paired him (Eddie) with a stunning female, K2. I got 2nd choice on a male, & went with the one that caught my eye the first time I saw the clutch. He has an almost jag pattern & he seems to have a yellow ground color, similar to his sire. He's 25% het Granite.
The other two are from the Patch X Kafka clutch, 50% het Granite.
I didn't chose them specifically for my future Granite projects, but it helps that they are possible hets.

I have two more babies planned. Another 100% het Granite baby from Nick Mutton (she's 50% WC outcrossed) & a Jungle female from my frined Julie.
The JCP I will get in the next few weeks. After a few more meals, or her second shed, whichever comes first.
I will pick up the het Granite female from Nick at NWCBE in October.

He's one of my absolute favorites, & I really regret not picking up a female from that clutch. I have a request in for a female if
hat pairing gets some again.

Wow! He's looking great!! Mine are in that range as well. Some a little smaller, some (Aedh) bigger.
I picked up a 2013 Granite male from Nick last weekend. He's from the same parents asmy 2012 Granite female, so he's WC outcrossed.
I am SO excited for my future Granite projects!
I need to add more pics, I see. :)

Beautiful pictures! I love carpets, and I'm torn between getting one of these guys or a dumerils boa in the future. The carpets have such a nice pattern and I like how they're fairly slender, but I would want to make sure that whichever one I got had a great temperament.

Carpet OR Dumeril's? Wait, we're only supposed to have one? Oops!

I'm a carpet girl, mostly Heather's fault. But another carpet friend sent me a baby Dumeril's with my carpet order last year. Absolutely awesome snake. So if you can only choose one, either choice will be a good one.

Thank you!! I'd say go for the Carpet Pythons, but I'm biased. Boas do nothing for me.
I'm not a fan of any of the bigger snakes, actually. Carpets are the biggest I'll own.

For temperment, almost all babies tend to be bitey, in general, with the exception of Inlands. Jungles tend to be more snarky even as adults, especially Zebras.
Coastal can go either way. Tiger Coastals tend to be bitey.
IJ's tend to mellow out with age, & they stay smaller of the Carpets.

My absolute favorites are Inlands & Granite IJ's.

An inland is definitely on my list. I almost got one last year but the price was hefty since there are so few in captivity. I figured I would wait a few years. They are desirable to me because of their small size and temperament.

I use Animal Plastics. It was between them and Constrictors NW. I chose AP because of the sliding door option. Constrictors NW only has the drop down doors.
The downside to AP is it takes a long time to get them.
Most of my Carpets are still young, so I don't have all of my cages, but I'm working on getting them before they need the full size.

Sorry that I missed this.
It depends on what kind of Carpet Python you are getting.
The smaller ones, like IJ's and Inlands are ok in the AP Carpet cage (3ft x 2ft x15") and the larger ones the T10's are better. Same dimentions except 4ft long.
Some people use the 12" tall cages, I like the added height and use 15" tall cages.

4x2x16" PVCs with scorched perches work wonders for adult carpets! Never tried AP cages but I've heard good things!

Most of my AP cages will have the built in shelves. They seem to really like the shelves.
