Exploding Mice

I had my first exploding mice. Normally I get the mice ready by taking them out of the freezer and putting them in a bowl of hot tap water. Within a few minutes or so they are nice and warm.
Well Monday is my feeding day but I was going to be gone all day. I knew I'd be tired when I got home and not want to wait around for the mice to thaw and get warm. So, I put the mice in a baggie and stuck them in the fridge to thaw (I used to to this anyway). Well dumb me forgot that being already thawed out that I wouldn't need hot water! When I came back to get the mice the water was the color of blood. When I picked each mouse up their bellies had popped open. It was so nasty!
I gave the popped mice to my snakes anyway. They actually ate them with vigor! It was very messy. But at least the snakes were nice enough to wipe their faces on the paper towels after eating to get the guts off lol!
Anyway, I just thought I'd share since it's the first time I've made mice explode and hopefully no one else will be as dumb as me. :dunce:

Yes the smell is terrible. I popped about 5 mice on my heater and I feed them to my snakes and I have not had a single regurgitation so far.

heh...one of our mice popped last week while the snake was eating it. She didn't seem to mind even slightly. The smell was unpleasant, and she definitely needed a quick shower before going home to digest.

I love it when the skin rips open when you go to dry them off! Not...

Well I got all my mice from rodent pro and out of the hundreds of mice I have only these 4 popped. It was a mistake on my part.

Grendel grabs the mice so hard he pops them sometimes. It's almost as awesome as when he paints with his poo.

Never had one pop, but some have bled out through their noses when defrosting in hot water. It's a real snake pleaser

That was TOO funny. ;) I'm glad mine don't do that!
When I was a park naturalist (eons ago), we used to take a frozen mouse, put it in a cup of water and nuke it gently for...I forget how long. The smell of defrosting mouse permeated the entire kitchen. So appetizing.

Hi, so what that is from is thawing them too quickly (hot water.) The reason for this is that when you place the mice in hot water, the temperature of the water slightly cooks the outside layer of the mice, making it tougher and not as easily expandable, so that as the mice thaws and expand it is faced with such a great amount of pressure that it explodes. Though the smell is usually the worst thing keep in mind that when this happens it is slightly cooking the mouse which will make the digestion a little tougher (which is why some snakes regurge after eating popped mice.) Good luck, and sorry about the smell;)

I thaw my mice pretty slow, so I never saw this happen until a couple weeks ago on a hopper/weanling sized mouse. It looked kind of weird to begin with, like in a weird position, which didn't help I think with the structural integrity of the belly.. anyway.. what an awful smell - very strong, bloody odor! Chai didn't mind however!

At our old house it took forever to get the tap to get hot and so I started to fill a small container of some kind with water from the tap, put it in the microwave for 15-25 seconds to get it warm and then put the mouse in. Until I got the correct time for the water down I did make quite a few pop. My snakes never cared, but the smell was horrendous!
Needless to say I didn't eat pasta for a while and I have taken to not feeding snakes before a meal. I eat, then I feed them. Dead mouse doesn't bother me as much that way.
