A little concerned... not sure what to do
So I got this little baby in mid March. I didn't know when I bought her but she was just blue, and she shed her second day with me. It was complete except her tail, a little further up the vent to the tip. I got her out and she was very irate. I soaked and soaked and rubbed gently to no avail. Finally on the second day the dang piece popped off. I thought she was fine so I thought nothing of it, and moved on. Well, recently I've noticed around her vent her tail looks pinched? I took some pictures but she's a squirmer. She was about 12g when I got her and now she's 16.3g. Should I get some antibiotic? I know her vent isn't clogged or any thing, she very lovingly peed all over me while I worked off the shed. The pictures aren't perfect but the top of it is sorta dark and the bottom just looks sorta dry. Is this the kind of thing that clears up with a shed? Thanks for looking.180053180054180055180056180057

Also, so sorry for double posting; I forgot to mention this - I've been calling her a she but I never actually got a confirmation on the gender. If anyone has any guesses by tail length, let me know. :)

hi mari ... im not too sure on the tail end of your question..... besides probing is looking at the distance from the tip of the tail to the anal.I think it is that if the anal is more farther up the tail , its a girl and if its shorter , its a boy .... hope this helps you ... :)

It does look like possible constriction. If it is, then a soak in cool (not cold) water can help. About 20 minutes or so, put a washrag in with her to slither through. I am not sure what a vet could do to help with it, as you don't want to force the old skin off since it risks tearing the new skin underneath.
Should I just soak it until her next shed or should I be trying to loosen it? I've been soaking her ever since I noticed it, and it always seems to look the same. When the shed did finally pop off I was pretty sure it was all of it, but obviously not... :S
So the good news is, she shed last night & the concerning spot has completely healed up and looks good as new.
The bad news is now I think she has some tail tip rot? It's a very small amount at the tip of her tail that's bright red. I last checked her cage at about 11pm last night and got home from work at 3pm today. I looked over the shed very carefully, from the vent down was stuck (like before) and a single dip in her bath tub and a once-over with a washcloth loosened it. The tip of the tail was stuck inside (like folded in) and I cut the shed open to confirm the tail tip was in there... and it was. And yet she looks like she has tail rot? This had to have happened between yesterday and today, because I checked on her yesterday.
What should I do? Neosporin?

My snow Udjat had a bit of stuck shed at about the last quarter inch of the tail, it was bright red when the shed slipped off, I believe it was raw skin. It's since turned black, and will either heal or come off on the next shed. I have just left it alone as it hasn't gotten bigger at all.
If you can get a photo, it will help give us a better idea.
So between now and when I posted the redness faded a lot. It was more of a beet red and now it's more maroon.180148180149180150180151

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but can you see any shed left on her tail tip? If not, I would feed her like normal and keep an eye on it.
I don't think there's any left on her tail - I checked the shed that came off thoroughly and there wasn't any. I also bathed her and ran her through a towel multiple times.
Thank you :)
Here's a picture from today... when I get home from work I'm going to give it a soak and make sure the shed is gone... 180162

It looks quite pinched. I wonder if she might lose her tail tip.
I know :( It doesn't look so good. Hopefully I can help her :( I'm at work right now, so when I get home I'm gonna try to soak it and see how it looks. I just don't understand why her sheds seem to go so badly - she uses the same humid hide my other corn did at her size, same room, same humidity, same tank, same substrate.. etc. The other snake sheds just fine. She's just had two weird ones.

Even if it does fall off, I wouldn't be too worried about it. It looks like a really small section of her tail, and lots of corns have lost the tips of their tails with no ill effects. I would just keep doing what you're doing - keep offering her a humid hide when she goes blue and then thoroughly check her every time she sheds to make sure it all came off.
Yeah you're right. Thanks. I just can't help but feel a little guilty, but I mean, the second I noticed the shed I checked it over, found the tail tip, found the eye caps, took her out, gave her a soak and a look over and her tail was already bright red and I came straight here. I don't feel like I did anything wrong, maybe she just doesn't want her tail tip :P

Don't feel guilty! It sounds like you did everything right.

when my snakes go "blue eye" i put a box in the viz filled with damp moss, just like an egg laying box.....this provides plenty of humidity and sheds are usually problem free......

Both my corn snakes have a humid hide with orchid moss that's kept damp 24/7, and during their shed cycles I make sure they go in, as I did with this little girl. She was in there the whole time but just seems to keep having a hard time with it. Her first shed with me (a month ago when I got her) was the second or third day after I brought her home, so she must have gone blue the day before I picked her up at Repticon. On that shed her tail portion didn't come off in one piece and I had to pull it off. And this one the same thing happened right at her vent.
It's just so strange because my other snake used the exact same humid hide and never had a problem. I've since upgraded him to a bigger humid hide which is why she has the smaller one. :headbang:
