I tried aspen to but got mites.

soil is more likely to be from burrowing but it can get caught on the prey. As long as he is eating and drinking regularly he should have no problems from impaction.

I would switch back to aspen, buy a new bag. I am not a fan of soil and definitely not sand for corns. You can feed outside the viv if you are worried, but I watch every beastie eat until it clears their lips just to be sure.
