Poker Died

Poker regurged, ate, and then regurged again over a period of a month so I got worried.

I took him to the vet where they found he had a blockage- they sent me two hours up to Columbus where they kept him overnight and did a surgery to remove it. It turned out to be a mass of bone that didn't digest. The surgery was a success, but he became lethargic and died a few hours later.

He was four months old and 6 grams.

Here is one of his last pics:

Here are his x-rays:

The top one is his dorsal-ventral ray. The bottom is his left side- you can see the white mass that is the blockage. The farthest lump to the left is his heart and the empty space is his lungs. On the farthest right, you can see white speckles which is stored fecal material, haha. The vets loved him and said he was the best corn they had ever worked with.

I don't know if this post is allowed here, but maybe it could help someone out, especially if they have similar issues.

RIP Poker, my little noodle baby~

I'm so sorry for your loss. You are an amazing pet owner to be willing to do surgery on such a tiny snake.

I'm so sorry to hear you lost your baby, who you obviously loved a lot to get him surgery! I am amazed that they can operate on such a little guy. And I agree with IrishInIsengard, thank you for posting the x-rays. I have never seen one either.

Awww dat face! He's beautiful.
I am so, so sorry.
This is so sad, but if you're willing to go above and beyond to take care of him, he had his best chances with you <3

Thank you everyone, I truly appreciate it. I had never seen an x-ray of a snake either! They put him in a plastic tube to hold him still, lol. His sutures are so tiny- they basically looped it around once and that was enough to close it. They told me his size might actually help because they wouldn't have to cut through as much muscle, but Poker had other ideas unfortunately. :S

Thanks everyone for your kind words, they really help~ <3

That is so sad! Do you plan on getting another snake? I'd love to send you a yearling, or I even have a couple adults who would be very happy to be an only pet! I could have Rich bring someone back up from Florida for you when he visits on July 4th! He's from New Carlisle- it wouldn't be hard to meet up. Think about it!

I'm so sorry. You are an exemplary owner in taking your snake for surgery. You did all humanly possible. This thread is a good memorial to Poker. RIP little guy.

Nanci this is such a sweet offer.
This is such a wonderful group of people.
We need more of this in all aspects of our lives <3
