I need advice on moss,
My snake had a hard time sheding and I do give him a bath but I wanted to make a humidity hide and need to know your thoughts on the moss that you use and where I can get some??.
Any thoughts would be great!! Thanks :)

I recommend sphagnum moss, but buy it in bulk for egg laying and incubation purposes. I would recommend checking out your local nurseries and see what they have available. The cleaner the better, but my experiences locally were that most of the stuff they had was very dusty and dirty.

I've used some similar to that before, but did not like it. Didn't seem to hold the moisture that well, and was rather messy. Very small pieces, dusty, etc.

I used to use the exact same moss as in the link (even bought it from the same place) and it was very nice, didn't have a problem with it being dusty or tiny pieces :shrugs: . The only problem I had with it is that it would mold very quickly.

Marybeth, would that be a problems (mold) if i bought the moss ahead of time?? I wouldn't want it to "spoil" on me?? I see that it comes in a plastic bag, I guess just keep it out of the sun??

It's dry in the bag, so unless you live in a very humid area it shouldn't mold untill you moisten it. :)

do the snakes still like to go into the moss even though it hasent been wet a bit? Is it even healthy for straight out of the bag moss?

I don't know about using it with snakes, I used it with my frogs. I think these guys use it damp in moist hides and lay boxes.
What do ya want to use it for?

well i was thinking about putting it inside the vivarium of my snake so he can hide in there just like he would in the wilderness. I seen a couple of people use that moss as some type of hide, i'm not sure if this is a good idead though, any suggestions? :shrugs:

Lucifer, I was referring to the stuff in your link. If you're planning on using it to supply a 'hide', I'd probably suggest to go with some cork bark for a natural hide.

Here are two of the first few results from a google search:

I work part time at a pet store, and we have it on hand. Your local pet store should be able to order it in from their distributor if they don't have it on hand.
