WE just got our first clutch of eggs to hatch, and am expericing problems getting the the little guys and gals to eat.
I've tried placing them in a deli dish for a couple of hours with the food items, and only one fo the neonates have eaten. Is this normal?
I'm conecerned as it has been 5 days without eating.

Generally hatchlings will not feed until after their first shed. Don't be discouraged with them not eatting right away. Give them a few days to adjust and they try the deli cup method again. :) Congrats on your first clutch!

Thanks,
I was getting pretty worried, as I now have 15 newbies..
I bred our miami normal to my amel and got 4 amels and 11 normals.
Thanks for the quick response

Dave, grats on the breeding, sounds like your normal is het amel...
It's true they generally do not want food until after they shed.
I had a clutch last year all refuse that ate when they were left overnight in delis with a f/t pinky, it was as if it just took them a long time to get it that this thing is food.
Whereabouts in OR are you?

Since you are using f/t you might also try offering only the heads- sometimes a smaller item will be accepted before a whole pink, no matter how small. You can cut the heads and offer now, then offer the bodies in a few weeks when they've gotten used to the idea of eating. . .

we're in Eugene, Thanks for the reply.
I am patiently waiting for the first shed and will then oer them a pinky in a cup.

congratulations on your hatchlings
I didn't attempt to feed mine before they had their first shed and luckily most of them ate straight away but i did have 4 that completely refused to eat (no-matter what i tried) i didn't do too bad though out of 34 hatchlings :)
Good luck with your hatchlings
