My snake has issues (help)

I posted earlier today that he has a mite problem. I'll never buy another snake from Petco. (or his bedding) Anyway I could return him and get a new one somewhere else. I just can't do it though because I feel it may be a death sentence for the little guy. I've also become quite fond of him. I read up on using Nix or Black Night to kill the mites (because it also destroys the eggs) What do you think would be better? I'm kind of scared to try the roach killer (Black Night) Also, Problem number two is that my snake seems like he's going to shed soon...not active and dull color and his eyes look cloudy. Should I wait until he's done shedding to work on the mites or fix the mite problem first? I'm worried about putting chemicals on him if he is going to shed soon. Please Help! I really hate those mites :twoguns: evil bugs indeed. BTW he's a young snake only 12-14 inches.

I've used Reptile Relief on all of our snakes at some point and I've also used Provent-A-Mite on the bedding to prevent mites. I'm not sure that I would use the latter with young snakes as I'm not sure how it would affect them but I've used the Reptile relief on younger snakes. As long as you follow the directions you should be ok. I'd definately read the other links though and decide what will work best for you.

I think the recommendation is that no poisons be applied during the shed cycle as they absorb too much of it. You can use vegetable or olive oil and coat the snake. You said something about the bedding. If you mean you got mites from the bedding, they are most likely wood mites and not harmful to reptiles. Most mites are either from other reptiles or brought in from a host like mice or a person.

i just recently had problems with mites... this is what worked for me.

first of all take her out of the cage and put her in another container. soak for 20 mins and wash her old container in SEVIN DUST from the hardware store. after that coat you lil snake in sevin dust and make sure it gets everywhere on her. wait 20 mins then carefully wash it off her making sure that it doesnt get in her mouth. wash out the container she was in and leave her alone for 2 days. after that pick her up and look at her, if there are more mites try picking them off her or cover her one more time in SEVIN DUST and leave it on her for longer this time. wait another 4 days before picking her up and looking if there are more mites. repeat process if there are more mites.. good luck

Again. During echydosis it is not recommended that any pesticide be applied to the snake. Wait until after shed.

Please don't use Black Night or Sevin Dust. If it can kill fire ants, it can kill your snake. Some have used diluted Nix, but IMO just use a product that is made for snakes like Reptile Relief. I've used it and it works.
