Feeding container

Penman6668

Dr. Jan Itor
I just got a new feeding container for my snakes. I am about to heat up a fuzzy for Firebolt and was wondering about the container and cleaning it. For those who feed their snakes in a separate container and have more than one snake, do you clean out the container between feedings and snakes?

I just want to make sure that I do the right thing and not transfer any disease or germs snake to snake.

If this helps, i use the same 2ft critter cadge with a divider to feed both corns and the boa (obvuously not at the same time)...

Therefore yes i do clean and disinfect after every feeding as to not pass on any bacteria or diseases etc...

However since i have a sick snake atm... i feed in her viv (something im not happy about doing).

I use cardboard boxes with some paper towels in them that I switch out whenever they get grungy. Otherwise, I don't sweat it...

I feed live, so after stunning the mouse, I merely drop my snake into the brown paper bag the mouse came in. Then throw away the bag.

I hope you take the snake out first :grin01:

Lol, that's what I thought...And could I enquire (I haven't got my snake yet), why don't most people feed it in it's viv?

There's two main reasons for this. First, unless you use newspaper or paper towel as a substrate, it's possible the snake can ingest some bedding while eating which can lead to impaction and death. The other major reason is that the snake might associate the opening of the cage with feeding, and they can strike at your hand thinking it is a mouse.

I feed in seperate tubs, and I do know they have come to associate being placed in the tub with food. I have one that will launch herself from it the moment I come near with the mouse -- I'd rather she do that there than in her cage when I'm reaching in to change the water. ;)

Thanks a lot, you might have just saved the life of the snake I am about to get :) And my hand lol. Research is one thing, but this forum is way more useful.

What sort/size container is best?

Thanks again.

the size depends on how big your snake is :crazy02: i use a sterilite container...which is pretty easy to clean

Sorry for this, one last question :) Do you put anything in the feeding container apart from the food or the snake? I don't want to get it all wrong when I get the snake, so prior knowlage is good.

Nope. Just put the snake back in the viv after it has eaten. Mine usually eat right away, so they are back in the viv within 5-10 minutes.
