Question about my snake

:..becca..:

New member
I was told that when you have a heat pad someday you will wake up to the snake sticking to the bottom of the cage where the heat pad is because it was to hot. Is this true? but anyways we got a heat lamp and everything is fine. but my snake seems to be not drinking. i have to hold him next to the bowl and he drinks got any suggestions about the water and the heat pad? should i take the heat pad off?

vivarium, terrarium, = the enclosure in which your snake lives in.

That's Great...

That's not what I asked, I asked what the tempratures are in your enclosure.

If you have to pick up your snake to take it to water he is dehydrating, thus you may be "cooking" your snake. The acceptable heat levels for the WARM side of an enclosure would be anywhere in the 80-85 range, on the COOL side in the 70's.

Heat pad as in "My back hurts, I think I'll use the heating pad on it." OR Heat mat as in specifically for reptiles (Under Tank Heater)?

Also, corns don't always drink right in front of you. Often times they'll get a drink when they are out cruising at night while you're not looking or while you're sleeping. I believe I only ever saw one of mine getting a drink (a few times) and that was only right after she had just eaten. Other than that, I never witnessed mine getting drinks.
This is especially important since he is new to you. You probably haven't had him long enough to have had a chance to seem him drink...and you still may never get to witness him getting a drink all by his lonesome. Corns don't suck down water several times a day. If he looks healthy and "happy", I wouldn't get too worried.

Also, if you wouldn't mind, it would be helpful (at least for me and I'm sure others as well) if you could change your font color. I have pretty good eyesight, but that green is hard for me to read :eek1:

... There is no need for a heat lamp.

Heat pads (UTH - Under Tank Heaters) are all that is needed, however even those should have a thermostat or rhenostat to be able to control the temprature, because even those by themselves get too hot.

It seems you did no research before decided to get your new pet.

Might I suggest you go out and purchase :

^WHOA! Forget what I say below and check out the post above mine!:D

Check out the FAQ's on this forum. A heat mat needs to be regulated in some way to prevent your snake from getting a burn. Also, a lamp and mat may be too hot. You should definitely have at least one decent thermometer ($7 indoor/outdoor digital at Wal-Mart, for example) to keep track of the temperatures.

I guess i will turn off the Under Tank Heater in fact i already did. but when i do hold him up to his water he drinks it like there was no water left in the world (just about) Well thank you for the advice

Ehh...that font might be worse than the green, LOL, sorry....:)

Where is the water bowl positioned in the viv? Try to put it closer to one of the sides rather than out in the middle of nowhere. I've heard that some (very few) younger corns at times will have trouble locating the water bowl if it's near the center of the viv and out in the open.
Since, they like to cruise around the outside edge of the viv, they have to encounter the water bowl if you place it near the edge.

Also, I think you're headed in the right direction using a UTH. Lamps can be too hot at times just like a heat mat. Personally, I think UTH's are easier than lamps. It's just VERY important to have some way of regulating your UTH so that it doesn't get too hot. It's also VERY important to have a reliable thermometer (not just a cheapo stick-on) to get temperature readings.

There's lots of material on this site, in the threads that SilentLore gave, and by doing searches (try the advanced 'search feature' for best results). But don't be afraid to ask questions if you can't find the answers.

I believe this quote was mainly intened for the original poster, but if not, I need an interpreter.

Correct spelling and grammar will go a long way towards getting coherent answers.
