mouth rot

Quick question about mouth rot.

I cam home tonight and found my adult male snow with a red swollen lower jaw , was not like that a couple of days ago .. I check them every two days , lizards one day snakes the second anyhow ...
red and swollen .. he is going to the vet tomorrow if I can get an appointment.
I swabbed the mouth on the outside with hydrogen pyroxide and water mix 50/50 solution he injested none .. when he rubbed in the towel I had him in what looked like aspen was on the towel a very small piece.
what I am asking is how long does it take for this condition to appear ? Did I miss something when I cleaned him two nights ago ? Could this have sprung up in the 2 days ? He ate last week just like normal every monday since I got him ...
I am really upset by this .. my snows are by far my fav snakes and now I am wondering what I could have done to prevent this ?
I have all my snakes on aspen ... should I have them on newspaper ?
This has never happend to me before ..
