How capable are Corn snakes at surviving falls?

Just out of curiosity here, do falls greatly harm Corn snakes, I'm talking about young ones here. Not great falls, just a couple of feet or so.

It would probably be ok if it landed on a softer surface. In the wild, they fall or drop out of trees pretty far.

Well, little snakes are VERY fragile so even a small fall could potentially break ribs, etc. If your snake does fall and seems not to be bothered by it, it is most likely alright.

Overall, falls=bad.

Okay thanks very much, and if you're wondering why I posted this, then I'll tell you. My snake's shedding and so obviously he's in a bad mood. So when I took him out earlier to bathe him he moved like a bullet out of my hand when he saw the water and he fell a couple of feet onto carpet. So as you say it shouldn't be too bad.

As with anything, the fall itself shouldn't do any harm at all. It really depends on the severity of the sudden stop at the end. :sidestep:

All depends how he/she landed too. Just like a human. A human can fall 2 feet on their head and die while a human can fall 15 feet and have a small fracture.
With snake the chances are that it most likely landed on its stomach so it should be fine.

As everyone else has said, a few feet on to carpet shouldn't be too bad. As long as he was able to slither off, I wouldn't worry. ;)

Ok, now that the whole falling part has been cleared up, let's move onto the bathing part...
There is no reason to bathe your snake because it's going into shed. The only time you should soak your snake, (in shallow water), is after a bad shed. Even then, you have to be careful because it's just too difficult to judge water temp. What you may think is warm, may still be too hot for a cold blooded animal, (remember, your 98.6 degrees)....The best way is to use a thermometer to get an accurate temp, (between 75-80), and only let them soak 5 - 10 minutes in shallow water, then let them wriggle through a towel enough times to work off the bad shed... If your snake is prone to bad sheds, I'd go the humid hide route, or spritz its tub or viv with a spray bottle at least once a day until shed...

Yeah I've been spraying his tank and I'm going to move his water bowl to the warm side of his tank to raise the humidity. He seems to have shed most of it now, so it seems I'll just continue doing what seems to work.

He should be fine,especially if he landed on carpet.Heck I landed on my head all the time when I was a kid and it da..da..da..didn't even ah..ah..ah..effect me a..a..a.. at all!!! :crazy02:

I am a new snake owner and had a similar question. If a snake falls a few inches in its enclosure and lands on its side but doesn't seem to be affected by it really should it be okay?

Ooh you'd be surprised how far they can go (I've seen them balance on 3-4" of tail with the rest jutting out into space!) BUT unfortunately gravity always wins :)

Yeah. lol. Mine sometimes will literally just keep slithering forward until its whole body is board straight and down it goes. lol. although, other times it will hold on to something with just the tip of its tail and kind of bob the rest of its body up and down or swing to tap on the glass to let me know it wants out. lol.

I have had hatchlings shoot out of tubs and land on a tiled floor 3-4 feet below them and handle it just fine. Those little buggers are quick when they want to be. I will say that they all land flat when they do it, so I'm guessing that's what helped them handle it.

I've seen hatchlings take flying leaps out of 10' tall racks and scurry on as though nothing happened. Same as jessmarie said, they usually seem to land fairly flat. :shrugs:

Ever since I got my little critter (3 months old) I can't help but wonder just what part of keeping the snake is supposed to be the silent one ... :-D Not a single night I won't hear "thud" .... "thud" .... "thud" from viv cause that clown of mine tries to ouuuuuutstrrrrretch in his viv and usually ending falling down ... was scared at first but he didn't seem to be affected by it, so guess it was fine ... the height is around 20cm anyways :) (have long shelf that basically divides viv into two halves horizontally but can be crawled through due to holes, shape and doesn't reach entire depth of the viv either)
