my hatchling usually is moving around late at night, and is always hiding during the day
my older one moves more around in the day as i handled her more during the day, she became less nocturnal and now moves around in the day
Also, your snake may just be scared of you, but that will probably pass

for what it's worth, we got an adult snake a couple weeks ago and she is shy too. she is always hiding under the aspen. She is fine when we take her out to play and feed. When we put her back, she cruises around for a few minutes, then back under the aspen never to be seen again. We are hoping she will warm up eventually.

Hiding, in hides or under substrate, is perfectly normal for a hatchling. If you provide more cover with plastic vines or fake plants, the snake may ironically be seen more as it feels more secure.

I'm new here today. My male corn is almost 5', my female is around 4'. Both were skidish and scared when new and the size that yours is now. My biggest fear wouldn't be hiding as much as escaping at that age. Check for the snake daily in the tank. My female would escape when she was little, even with a brick on the cage. She'd climb up a hanging plant and wedge herself into the roots.
I know that some fish and some reptiles, feel safer with more places to hide. I live in Colorado and large river rock makes great cavework. I've also purchased many pieces of decorative aquarium driftwood and a couple of branches with numerous sub branches for climbing. Don't use wild branches without curing. They can contain insects and parisites. So, only store bought wood!! Granite and quartz can be well scrubbed.
Now days they are all over the cage/tank. different place every time I look and sometimes doing laps. In and out of rock work up and down branches. My cats love them.
