Has anybody had any experience with this camera, and if so is it "good"?

I found this website after I bought my nikon coolpix p50 (which pretty much indicated that I could have done better).

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/NikonD80/page29.asp

You can use the bar up on the top to go to different sections of the review (I linked the "conclusion" page to go straight to the meat so to speak). It seems like a very comprehensive "consumer reports" type site, with head-to-head testing vs other cameras at different settings, and you can see how the photos compare.

I'm using a Nikon D60, which is (so far) camera enough for me. From what I hear the D80 is a nice camera, but not such a huge improvement over the D40x and D60. Depends on how often you plan to use it.

They're compatable with most other lenses. And if you buy - say - a D40x with a kit initially and if you think you want/need a better camera you can sell the body and buy a D80 body because the lenses will work for both.

You can do an image search on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/cameras/nikon/) by camera. This lets you see what a camera is capable of (of course you need to keep in mind what lenses people are using).

I don't think you can go wrong with a Nikon SLR, but look carefully at the differences between the models. You may be able to get a cheaper model that fits your needs better.
