Finally, it took flipping boards along that road with all the DOR animals to find a live one but here she is. Probably the "ugliest" cornsnake alive. Although I love the neat greys and faded oranges. Just like the morphs we all seem to covet, this animal is something different.

Man! that is one ugly cornsnake but i love it lol! Where did you find it? Would you call that a hypermelanistic or just a locality? Keep up the great finds!

Wow Wow Wow and Wow.

I know you guys are saying "ugly" as a good thing but that thing is so far from ugly I can't believe it. What a beautiful cornsnake!

IF that was readily available I would be all over it. The colors are simply amazing. Natural cornsnakes are the best out there. GREAT FIND!

I love the grey background with the oranges showing through...Kinda reminds me of another snake I know of that is grey w/orange saddles...

Actually, that looks very close to a snake I recently received. I was supposed to be getting a Miami female, but the one I thought I was buying "escaped" after the guy received my money (I bought her off the FaunaClassifieds). Anyway, the one he sent me as a replacement looks very similar to this one, except the background color is not quite as dark, and her saddles are a bit redder. She's a recent wild-caught specimen (again, what I wasn't expecting) from somewhere in south Florida. Where did you find the one pictured on this post?

This one was found in North Georgia, but some animals from Okeechobee, Co are very similar.

I like that snake. Look at those stripes near it's mouth. Resembles tiger. Never seen that on any other "non ugly" corn.

My corn has similar stripes...and I think it's an absolute beauty!! NOT ugly...lucky for finding it....

Referring to this girl as "ugly" wasn't serious. Although if you compare her to others or show her to non cornsnake freaks (like us) the consensus would most likely be so. I find the different looking animals from lesser known localities to be beautiful in thier own right, just as this female is.

Wow, I would love to find ONE wild corn snake ...let alone many corn snakes in the wild. They are considered endangered and very rare to find my way. I always bring my digi camera just in case i find one BUT had no luck this season so far. maybe next year??
oh well!
:( guess ya can't compete with habitat destruction and construction of new homes!

Hey! I had a corn like that, but mine was darker and muddier, and for the longest time I thought it was a black rat, but I noticed the orange and red and it took some bright light to see the saddling underneath all the black. I gave it to my cousin though since she wanted to breed some snakes with him.

Lemur,

Many Black Rats have orange/red interstitial skin and pigmentation on the scales also many keep the saddles
into adulthood. So don't be too sure you didn't have a
obsoleta. If it took a bright light to see the saddles I
would guess that it is in fact a obsoleta but it would take
seeing a photo to be sure. What did the underside look like?

Underside had checkers like a normal corn. The head pattern and the eyes matched my normal corn more than it matched a black rat, plus the rostral scale and that big scale on top of his head also looked a lil off when compared to a black rat and looked like a corn. I guess it looked like the one you posted, except mine had no white markings on it's dorsal side and the black was more prevailant and he had red/orange eyes like yours. The scales were smooth and unkeeled, and I know that black rats have keeled scales.

I would like to find a black rat up here, but in massachusets they are endangered. (illegal to collect, harass, etc.)

I heard they can get quite lenghty, seven to eight feet?

She looks kind'of evil. Like she's just waiting for you to try something so she can show you her "true" colors. :)

thats a pretty big corn snake. do you know exactly how long it is?

Horridus
10-01-2003, 09:02 AM
She was approx 36-38"....stocky but not that long. Have found some true 5' DOR animals in southern GA, they are something to behold. I always wanted to see a Lavender or a hypo like those. But they never seem to get quite that size. These animals were as big around as a tennis ball. Really impressive and depressing at the same time. I have seen three like this and all of them were from the same county. Maybe some giant genes at work there? All were males (of course)

I can vouch for that. About 30 years ago (or so) three of us caught an 8' black rat along the Susquehanna river in southern York County, PA. He was actually fairly gentle even throughout the capture process. Still, it DID take three of us to subdue it and get it out of the rock wall, actually an old canal lock.
I traded it to a pet shop for a baby boa since I was the only one of the three allowed to keep snakes.

Snake stories are often strecthed, like fishing stories, but I caught a HUGE black rat as a kid that was well over seven feet if it was an inch. All my books and field guides maxed them out at over a foot shorter. I released it after a year, and later saw another sunning on my road that was even larger. Either that or this one had gained quite a bit of girth. Tried to catch it, but it said "no." To this day I wish I could've recorded that animal's size and weight and had it verified somehow.

what part of NC are you from? we could be catching snakes in the same area.

horridus, I posted a "wanted" ad about 1 year ago looking for ugly cornsnakes. The picture of that cornsnake is EXACTLY what I am looking for. Of couse, I don't really think it's ugly, but it's definately different.
The offer still stands. If anybody has an adult corsnake that is real dark like that I want it and I will pay for it. I don't care what part of the range it comes from as I have seen them look like that in southern Maryland too. If you prefer to trade something I have WC South Carolina cornsnakes every now and then. I also might have some F1 Okeetee locality cornsnakes hatchlings this year.
Let me know.

I hope you find some you like. If you ever breed any that look like this one, get the word out-I'd love one like it.

What a beauty! Ive always prefered darker corns, I often feel that snows, amels and butters are a little artificial looking for my tastes. I love her dark grey rear end, and the stripes on her lips are incredible. Id buy her in a heartbeat!

Jeez I'd like a snake like that! She's so unique looking. I wonder what you'd have to do to breed a snake like that? But then again part of her beauty may be that she is so unusual. I love the metallic greys blended with the black and red... can't beat mother nature.:p

I came across this in the kingsnake.com photo gallery and thought it looked similar, but it's hard to tell from the angle. http://gallery.pethobbyist.com/index.pl?photo=138804

Heres a photo of a corn I found recently road cruising, it reminded me of this photo, Shes dark on the lower part of her body and light up top with the "fangs" to, I found it interesting as most of the corns here a lighter. I wish she was as dark as the one posted but oh well shes close enough for me. LOL
