ShipYourReptiles - temp snake shipping halt

Uh oh, just got this email:

Due to some irresponsible shippers, UPS has directed our customers to temporarily stop shipping snakes with ShipYourReptiles.com.

We are working hard to reinstate safe snake shipping for our customers and the entire reptile community.

Other types of UPS-approved non-venomous reptiles — including geckos, lizards and turtles — may be shipped with ShipYourReptiles.com.

To make your shipments easy, we recommend you drop off your packages at a Staples or Office Depot shipping counter.

We will keep you updated on this matter.

Thanks for your patience and support,

-- Robyn and the ShipYourReptiles.com team

Fortunately a) I currently have no snakes for sale, I didn't breed much this year, and it'll be 2 months before eggs hatch and b) I'm fedex certified, but this saddens me a lot. Plus the prices were great.

Anyone know what happened

I figure someone decided it'd be a great way to send something dangerous >:/ I'm still curious about the particulars, though.

Or just something as simple as an escapee in the wrong delivwery truck or office.

Before FEDEX certification, I had even received snakes loose in a taped up box. No snake bag or cushioning. This SYR thing will have problems as long as individuals can rock the boat for the entire group while having very little personal losses. Nutjobs will do what nutjobs do!

Personally, I would love to see UPS go to individual certification (like FedEx) so nutjobs don't get approval OR lose it if they personally do something stupid. The SYR concept has always been a bad idea to me.

I agree! Even with the ease of being able to use a service like "shipyourreptiles.com", I still went through the certification process with FedEx. The process was long and full of speed bumps, but I completed it. I realize that easier and cheaper isn't always better.

Here's an image that was recovered at the UPS Store in question. It appears the gentleman walked in and asked, "Can I ship these in an insulated envelope or do I need to use a box?"

Ruined it for the rest of us!

True, true I like the actual fedex certification / packing inspection process.
However, it took a long time before I could get an agent who would return my calls and properly talk me through it XP And the people at the fedex office were totally boggled at my test box - vs the UPS office, boxes were clearly labeled but no one had a problem with it. But that's probably just individual/location variation.
Overall the tighter regulation is good, but fedex didn't seem to communicate the policy among its employees well, plus the SYR price break was nice.

The predictable outcome. ;)

What he said. I would NEVER buy snakes that had to be shipped if SYR was the only shipping method. There is no quality control. At least if someone is a certified FedEx shipper, at one point they put together a properly-assembled test package.

Ditto what Nanci said.
Who was it who had the ball python shipping nightmare through them?
That incident forever formed my opinion of this thing....

Stef. Permanently etched in my mind, also. She is much more forgiving than I would have been. Of course I would have died of heart failure.

Yes, I thought it was Steph, but was not certain.
And I would have died of heart failure too, or burst a blood vessel, or ended up in jail....it would not have ended well....

I would imagine some one did some thing really stupid such as shipped a hot or packaged wrong and had an escapee.

I personally don't see why some people think another company besides FedEx shouldn't be allowed to ship snakes. Makes no sense to me. Why wouldn't we want competition for the only company we can use? I mean seriously, FedEx keeps raising their rates and it's getting ridiculous. But hey, they can do that because...oh yeah, they have no competitor that allows shipping of reptiles. So they can rip us off any time they chose. I guess it's like some people are raised only driving Fords so they dog out any thing that's not a Ford. Sure makes sense to me..NOT.

EDIT: I also wanted to say that I am one of those people that have used both FedEx and UPS. Not one time have I had a problem with UPS pick up, delivery or price wise. They have been as much as $20 cheaper for my customers. But, I have had issues with FedEx on more than one occasion. I think the problem is, those who have had problems with fedex don't want to voice it due to fear of being ripped apart and accused of doing some thing wrong with packing etc.

Nanci I posted a thread on this in the general chit chat area earlier. I guess I picked the wrong spot for it so maybe its best just to delete it from there? I have not the power to make it be, so if you would like to whack it from existence I shant be offended :bird:

I'm not saying UPS shouldn't ship snakes. I'm saying unless they have a certification process to ensure that the shipper has been taught to ship safely I wouldn't trust many people to ship other than FedEx.
