vet advice: soaking 2x day?
 

just got back from the vet with my corn. got him some vitamins. And some strange advice; I was told he wasn't dehydrated and he doesn't have any stuck shed but the vet wanted to get him out, put him in a big tub deep enough to swim and soak him twice a day. She also said i had to feed outside the enclosure. And increase the hot spot to 85 it is at 80 right now. I don't want to sound like I know better then the vet but that doesn't sound right.

most of us keep our hot spots at 82 to 86 degrees (mine is 85), and our cool spots around 75.

Soaking him in a deep tub doesn't sound right to me. There's nothing wrong with soaking, but corn snakes are generally not swimmers. If you plan to soak him, the water need not be more than "His Diameter at the widest point" deep. If it's a 1 inch corn snake, then 1 inch of water is plenty.

If he does not have stuck shed, why would you soak him? Soaking is something you also do for constipation. Is your snake constipated?

You really have not provided any info in your post other than you keep your cage on the cool side.

It wouldn't hurt to increase the hot spot temp, but if the ambient tempts are not too low, it's not critical.
You can put a large water dish in for your snake to soak in whenever he wants to, but putting him in a big tub twice a day is not necessary.
Feeding outside the enclosure is a personal preference, but not necessary either. Some swear that feeding inside the enclosure causes aggression, but that's a myth. If the only time you open the enclosure is to feed, that is what they will expect.

Very unusual suggestions by your vet. I'm wondering if she knows the natural habitat of a corn snake? My corns hate soaking and I only resort to it if I suspect one of them isn't passing feces for some reason. Stuck sheds don't need soaking in a large tub, even if that was the problem. Feeding outside the enclosure is not necessary. Most people do that so the corn doesn't have a feeding response every time you open the vivarium. If I had a preference I'd feed in the enclosure and have the corn defecate in an easy to clean container. LOL. Raising the temp on the warm side to 85 is not a problem, but don't be surprised if your corn stays on the cool side most of the time.

That's kinda what I thought. The only thing wrong with him is his breeding season fast went on a little long and I wanted to be sure he didn't have an RI or something. He already prefers the cold side. I will be getting bigger dishes for both corns and my ball but I don't think I will force anyone to soak. He hasn't been pooping as much but he also hasn't been eating. And he did pass a little feces with his last shed a couple weeks ago.

When I lived in Michigan my vet didn't have a lot of reptile knowledge, but she was a graduate of Michigan State. She could ask the reptile specialist there if she needed health advice for one of my snakes.
