Shedding
Hi can anybody help me. My young 16 weeks corn snake is having a really bad shed. He has bits hanging off every were and has done for a while now. I’ve been spraying the stuff on him that the pet shop told me to do and bathed him but don’t seem to be making a difference his eyes have been cleared for a few weeks now it’s just the rest of him that’s hanging off in different places. He needs to shed so he can eat as he hasn’t eaten since the 30/09 can anybody advise please x

Hopefully someone with a lot more experience will post, but in the meantime I'll pass on what I have read elsewhere. The usual advice seems to be to give the snake a good soak for 30 mins or so in an inch of lukewarm water at the bottom of a lidded container, or in a container with damp moss or damp paper towels, and then get him to crawl through a wet towel in your hands a few times which hopefully will gently remove the remaining scraps of shed.
In the meantime, you might want to give some thought about your set up. As I understand it, bad sheds like this can indicate that the humidity levels in your snake's enclosure are too low. Are you heating it with a bulb as opposed to a heat mat? Is there a decent sized water bowl in it? Do you provide a moist hide when your snake is about to shed? Hope this helps, and that things work out OK. |
Hi thank you for your help. I had an experienced snake owner come have a look and apparently his set up is spot on. I’ve done everything but the towel thing. I don’t want to hurt him :( he’s looking better tonight more has come off x

Oh - and personally I would feed him straight away if he will eat - a month seems to me to
be a long time for a 16 week corn to not be eating, and I'm not aware of any material reason not to press on just because of an incomplete shed. |
He won’t eat but he’s started to look up and open his mouth so I’m going to try feed him tonight now most of his shed is off as I’m worrying thank you very much

He shedded completely last night he looks like he’s hunting now so I’ll try feed him tonight. I’ve rang a vet and they said he should be ready to eat and the bad shed could be because it’s his first shed with me so I’ll see if he eats tonight
