Official Thread For Obtaining Growth/Size Data for Corns

The object of this thread is to obtain lengths and weights of corn snakes at various ages.

I posted a thread earlier inquiring if anyone would be interested in participating, and there seemed to be enough interest to get it going. I think it will be very helpful for those of us wondering where our snake stands compared to the rest of the population. There are a ton of threads asking just this, with no definitive answer as to what's an acceptable size for various aged snakes. I really would like to get official growth records going so that everyone can benefit from it!

Procedure/Information:

With this data, I will calculate basic averages for each age group. I will also calculate percentiles for each age group. The latter calculations will be the most useful because individual snakes can vary significantly in size.

I plan on formatting it similarly to a percentile growth chart you would see at the pediatrician.

I intend on doing calculations separately for each gender, and also one huge calculation for combined sexes.

I've decided against asking for feeding habits, because I don't want to end up accidentally carefully selecting the study group. It seems as if a lot of users follow the Munson Plan, so our results will likely cater to this group, but it's still important to include every snake in order to get as close to the population of pet corn snakes as possible. That being said, if there are numbers that are drastically higher or lower (outliers), I might need to inquire feeding habits in order to determine weather or not these should be thrown out. I don't want to offend anyone if that happens; it would be done solely for purposes of accuracy, and done through private message. Because I am new to corn snakes (I've had mine for only 2 or so months), I might need to consult with those of you with experience to determine if any outliers seem abnormal enough to be disregarded.

Lastly, this thread will be dedicated solely to submitting data. If everyone could refrain from other discussions, it would make it easier for me to transfer numbers. If anyone wants to talk about anything they see, I made another thread in this same forum where you can. Also, any questions or advice for me can go there as well. I especially appreciate advice- if you see anything that you think should be done in a different way, please let me know!

If anyone would prefer submitting their data through e-mail, mine is ccrouch1116@gmail.com. Make sure you include a relevant subject so I don't accidentally delete it.

Thanks ahead of time to everyone who participates! Hopefully we can get enough numbers for this to be an accurate reference for everyone!

What to submit
1. Age - If the snake is hatchling - one year, list age as month. Round up or down appropriately (example: snake that is 1.5 months = 2 months)
If the snake is a year or older, submit age in year. Also round up or down.

2. Length - Please submit in metric form (meters or centimeters)
1 foot= .3048 meters
1 inch= 2.54 centimeters

3. Gender - Only include if snake has been popped or probed.

4. Weight - please list in grams.

If you've kept monthly records of individual snakes, I would love to have those!

Almost forgot: If you do not have a scale to weigh your snake, please feel free to still submit length records. The more data we have, the more reliable this will be!

Here is a measuring app that can be helpful gettting the length.

We just got the scales in February, as you can see ;) But here are the growth charts for those few months. They are weighed prior to feeding each week. I tried to note when they were blue/shedding, as we don't feed then, which accounts for the gram or two drop during those time frames.

They are fed roughly according to Munson. And by that, I use that as a rough guideline for when to move up a size. Kusanagi has actually been slow to move to fuzzies. She doesn't reliably eat them, so we offer her lite food (pinks) when she refuses fuzzies. I have the exact meals on each if you eventually need that information.

I only included our 2010 snakes. They are currenly on a 5-day feeding schedule, although Angel just moved to a 7-day with the adults, as she's eating larger food now.

Lisa,

For Nina and Kusangi, do you think February is close to around the month they were hatched?

HeavenHell 06-02-2011 09:15 PM

Cassie, Cornwallis weighed in at 105 grams today (6/2/2011). I planned to weigh him on his birthday but he was deep in blue so I didn't want to disturb him.

Nina was hatched 6/19/10. Kusanagi was a late hatch...I think the guy at the store said August? We bought her in October and she was absolutely tiny. Angel was probably an April or early May hatch.

Excellent idea! :) We are just starting to keep our own records. Malachite just joined our home two weeks ago, but we will be doing regular record keeping, and are happy to contribute.

What I have so far:
1. Age - 5 years (I don't have a hatch date, just 2006 as his hatch year.)
2. Length - 1 meter (as of 6/3/2011)
3. Gender - Male
4. Weight - 200gs (He was last weighed prior to brumation; I will update this as soon as we have a current weight.)

Thanks guys! I've already started to put these numbers in an excel document. Keep them coming!
