Adult Refusing to eat and pooping on prey

Hello!

I have had a female corn snake for about six years now. She has never had any problems eating until a couple months ago. She has stopped eating, but will still strike at her prey at first. She will act interested, sometimes attempt to eat, then defecate on her mouse and act terrified of it. We recently lost a baby hognose to the same exact situation, except she wouldn't strike at the food at all. The corn snake stopped eating shortly after the hognose. Could something be wrong with the mice, or my care? I try to keep proper temperature gradients, always fresh water, hides, etc. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

If you cared for the corn for 6 years and she survived without incident I don't think it's your care. Were the corn and hognose kept in separate tanks or vivariums? Were they ever together, even briefly? Did you wash your hands before handling the hognose and then the corn? Were the mice purchased from the same place? It is unusual to bring disease in with frozen mice, however, I brought coccidiosis and pinworms in with mice I bought. I was bringing feces samples to my local vet yearly, since she did the samples so inexpensively, and I had no internal parasites for several years. Then one year she found coccidia and a couple years later pinworms. So it is possible to bring in internal parasites. It is curious that the corn defecated on the dead mouse. I can't remember seeing that with any of my snakes. Anyway, it's best to seek a good reptile vet. Some of the things I'd try aren't accomplished without a lot of experience.
