Black rat snakes with white tummies all over my area. One of the most common snakes I find in my back yard. Suffice it to say, they can get quite large. Definitely one beautiful snake in its own right.

Not what it seems

And now I find out my black rat is not a black rat at all, but a hybrid Texas Ratsnake x Black Ratsnake.

So, apparently some work went into creating these lovely devils.

Suffice it to say, it came as news to me that I had a hybrid which is funny in a way as I love buying hybrids, I just wish the darn thing was properly labeled as a hybrid and sold as a hybrid.

Not trying to make too big a deal out of this as I am happy the truth is out now rather than later, but thought I would share this information with you that the scaleless gene in black rat snakes actually comes from the texas ratsnake if anyone happens to find one for sale.

And one more

Got them both at the same time... both must now be suspect

The only scaleless gene i know of in Rat snakes is originally from the Texas Rats (don't know the history) so any scaleless Everglades and now black rats will most likely be from Texas/"X" crosses. If you like scaleless rats I wouldn't lose sleep, other than being perturbed at the mislabeling :grin01:
