Most breeders "pop" the small corns or hatchlings in an attempt to visually see the hemipenes. While this is usually successful, it is not guaranteed 100% of the time with very small corns. I've had three well known snake breeders make mistakes using the popping method. Two of the mistakes turned out to be males instead of females. kind of ruins a person's long range breeding plans. It is possible that your corn is indeed a male, but probing is the only way to verify it. Rather than asking a vet to do the probing, which will probably be expensive, you may want to ask any local snake breeders or herp societies in your area if someone can assist you. In any event, going off feed for weeks or even months is no big concern unless the corn is losing weight. In some instances I've had virgin females go off feed for two weeks just before they laid slug eggs.
