I just put both food items in there at once. Just in case you haven't thought about it, I suggest feeding frozen/thawed or prekilled mice instead of live. A dead mouse never bit or killed a snake, whereas live ones sure have. They cause lots of problems with bites becoming infected, blindness from a bite to an eye, etc. Some people say that in the wild, snakes eat live mice with no problems. This is not true, we just don't see the snakes that die or are blinded from it. And a cornered mouse is not a pleasant creature to be around. In the wild, the mouse can run, in a tank he cannot, so he will turn and fight. Just my opinion, if you really have it in your heart that you have to feed live for some reason, you can ignore it.
