Snakes can sometimes be found basking in the sun. They do this to warm up on relatively cool days. Since "we" (those of us that own and keep pet snakes) provide correct heating and caging, basking is not necessary. Unless the only source of heat is from an overhead lamp.
Providing a heat pad thermostatically controlled to the correct temps removes the need for a lamp.
For every snake "You See" basking in the sun, there are millions you never notice under leaves and rocks and logs. Which is where they would prefer to be.
