Spring 2012 Snake Count

Buzzard

two corny
So Jamie and I signed up for the spring 2012 snake count, and today was the first day we really got serious. Here is a link to the event....

Now on to the excitment.....

We were on our way to the lake when we bumped into our first snake of the day, laying on the side of the road. We slammed on the brakes and hit reverse to remove this awesome gray ratsnake from the road....

Notice the tail or the lack of tail. (A well healed up old injury)

Then off to the woods after a good long talk about playing on roadways :)

So we arrived at the lake and started walking around the edge of the water, we noticed the dragonflies and damselflies were starting to come out..They were very pretty

So after chasing some dragonflies, we wondered through the woods rolling logs and looking in and around wood piles. We stopped to look at a neat spot, basically to see if we could hear anything.... Jamie proceeded to see a kingsnake that I was practically standing on.

We proceeded through the next hour or so to see tons of lizards, skinks ... Oh and hundreds if not thousands of tiny toads...

But no more snakes today.

So please if you have a few extra hours this week, go to the link.. sign up and happy counting :D.

Awesome pics! I'm signed up, but haven't found anything yet... I haven't seen the racers lately that hang out by my complex, so I can't even count them!

At least you found a couple snakes! Even if you didn't find many, it sounds like you had a nice nature hike with lots of other neat critters to see!

lol... Find them racers, they need all the snakes they can get :)

That king is beautiful

Thanks Bryan .. He was the biggest Kingsnake that I have ever seen in the wild.

Yes, we had a great hike. And all the critters were great to see :)

Lovely photos. The blue on that bluet is soooo vibrant. I love dragon and damselflies.

Thanks, Jamie is really good at the "flies". She loves them too.

We went again today. This time to a different area. WOOOHOO found a ton of cottonmouths(but we kept our distance).

We also saw a couple of water snakes. This one was a "tree shaker". We only found him because he knocked some loose leaves into the water.

This water snake was mad... look at how flat he made his head look.

We also saw 2 black racers but were unable to get their pictures.
