Corn Snake in NW New Jersey Normal?

justcurious

New member
Hi - joined this forum as I am just so curious. A Friend and I found a dead snake on the road while biking the other day on a mountain in Northwest New Jersey. OK - just barely a mountain - but definitely at an elevation that is always cooler than most of the state and about a month behind in growing season.

Anyway, did a little research to see what it was and it looks like a corn snake. when I looked on NJ DEP's website, it said they're only in Cumberland County - southern part of state - and on the endangered species list. But, looking at this site, it seems that the corn snake is alive and doing well.

Is it that odd to have seen this snake about 100 miles north of what the DEP's site says is it's natural habitat? Here's a photo...sorry it's a little gruesome.

Was just reading how the pythons are making their way up north now - so it sparked my curiousity again to check this out since DEP has not responded.

Thanks!

That is a milk snake. However don't believe everything you read. I have found Corn snakes in Middlesex County. I work for a water utility and I have found corns in our meter pits in Edison, New Jersey. right before you go over The the Raritian River, ( AKA RT 9, and Garden State Parkway bridges. I have never found one north of the Bay (bridges).

As I've heard it, wild corn snakes are endangered in New Jersey. Not so much through the the Carolinas and Florida. And, yeah, it's an eastern milk snake. =)

I could supply input on the python thing. But I'd probably end up sounding stupid because I haven't done a ton of research. So I'll leave it at this: Oh boy. The media's at it again. =P

Wow - thanks all for your info!! It looked identical to the corn snake on the DEP site. But now I see the Milk Snake and guess you guys are right. Had no idea there was so much interest in snakes out there. Pretty neat.... and gee - used to live in Edison and that's still quite a bit north from Cumberland County.

I live in Ocean County and I know they can be found in the surrounding area and around Basto lake in Basto state forest. Eventually I'm gonna drag myself down there to go herping.
Glad to have someone else from the state here!
