rubbermaid housing?

I'm thinking about starting a small (1:2 or so) mouse colony. Was wondering if anyone uses rubbermaid type containers as housing? I know rodents like to chew so I don't know if the plastic tubs would be ok or not and was wondering if anyone had experience using them?

Also, what kind of bedding do you recommend?

I have kept mice in Rubbermaid before & had no problems with them chewing on it as long as they had other things to chew -- paper towel or TP rolls & pieces of chemical free wood. Easy to clean too.

PS Aspen is great mouse bedding, cedar & pine are bad for mice too. Shredded paper would probably work fine. Paper towels work OK in an emergency. So pretty much if you can use it as a substrate for corns...

Heather, I have used Rubbermaid for years and not had a problem. I have made wire tops for them so they get plenty of ventilation. I have always used pine shavings because they are readily available to me and aspen is not. They are also much cheaper. I don't care what you read on the Internet.

I've been using a 16-qt Sterilite for my remaining mouse colony. For ventilation, I simply drilled a crap-load of holes in the lid and a few rows on the top sides. It's working fine, though I'd recommend going a better (less chew-able) route for ventilation for more active mice. The 16-qt sterilite is slightly smaller than a 10 gallon aquarium, and has worked fine for my 1.3 colony.
