How to make a Humidity Hide aka a Shed Box/Hide
Homemade Humidity Hide
An easy home made humidity hide can be made from a plastic or foam box of some sort (with a lid) and a substrate that can hold moisture. Plastic storage containers work well as you can choose from a wide variety of sizes to suit your reptile. Simply cut a hole in the side or lid just large enough for your reptile to comfortably get in and out of the box (file or sand away any rough edges or use a lighter to melt the rough edges). Then, fill the bottom of the container with a moisture-holding substrate. Sphagnum moss is a good choice, but you can also use paper towels (easy to use and maintain), or a brand new dish washing sponge. Or a reptile substrate such as Bed-a-Beast. Make sure the substrate is always damp - not too damp, but damp enough to make sure the hide provides a localized area of very high humidity. You can leave it in the viv for a week and if need be periodically check the dampness and spray it with water.
Materials:
1 plastic or foam container with lid
1 lighter/sandpaper/or file
Some substrate (paper towels, a sponge, or moss)
Knife or Scissors
Procedure: If you need steps...
1. Get the container you are going to use. Not too big and not too small.
2. Cut a hole big enough for the snake to get into the container. Top of the lid is better, but you get get away with putting a hole in the side.
3. Smooth out the rough edges that you just made by cutting a hole. If using foam skip this step.
4. Place the moisture-holding substrate into the container, either at the bottom or loosely so your snake can get into it.
5. Dampen the substrate reasonably. Too much is not good, not enough don't have any effects.
6. Keep hide Damp to keep up the humidity levels.
7. Place homemade humidity box into viv.
Your done and you've saved money. Congrats! Enjoy your new shed box. Once your snake is done shedding, take it out and throw it away for clean it out and keep the container, and repeat steps 4-7.
