Baby hognose and crowned snake

Went out herping again today and found some interesting stuff. We found a baby southern hognose snake that had some great markings. He even did his playing dead act for us!









Also we found this little crowned snake, which is common, but always fun to find.

Yeah! The hognoses make a huge scene if you bother them. They hiss and puff up and try to pretend to be a venomous snake. Then they roll on their back, flop their tongue out and release a musky, dead smell.

I love the fact that they flop their tongue out, like they've watched too many looney tunes and got the idea there.
