wood water sealant and staining

I'm getting ready to build my new viv and I just wanted to know is it safe to stain the wood or use water sealant on it? I didn't know if the fumes would be a problem or if i let it air itself out before moving any snakes in if it would be okay. If not I plan on using tiles for the floor so that wouldnt' be a problem but I really want that nice finished look to the wood because this is going to be a living room exhibit and it will be shown off to everybody who comes over.

I've used clear polyurathane wooden floor varnish in one of mine. Three coats, allow to dry and fine sandpaper after coats one and two. I just left it open for a couple of weeks afterwards, then ran it empty with the heater on for a couple more, to make sure that any residual fumes had cleared.

Thanks bitsy after posting this I had found a similair post on another forums that said the same thing. I really like the idea of using of pressed wood to make it but I want it to be sturdy so I'm opting out for prefinished and treated pressed wood to do all this by hand. I hope it turns out really great.

Also what about the stain finish on the wood? I'm using aspen to build it but I want a nice dark walnut colored stain to the wood so it matches more of our furniture. If allowed the 3-4 weeks to air out will it be safe as well?
