flex watt size

Hello, I am trying to purchase 4 in flex watt for a new tub. I was wondering if the length of the flex watt can be smaller than the tub, that is to say, can I use an 8 in long piece of flex watt on a 10 in tub. This is for a rosy boa but I figured I would post on this forum due to similar heating requirements. Thank you.
