Ring Necked Snake

My son found this at his house under some wood he was moving. He and I didn't even know this snake was in Delaware! It's a ring necked snake and is known to be highly venomous ... what? okay, very venomous ... okay, okay .... mildly venomous. Depending on where you look and who you talk to, it's non-venomous. It's saliva has a mild toxin that helps subdue it's prey. I've read they are harmless and won't bite when caught. Rarely seen though! Glad he had his phone with him to grab this photo! And then ... yes, it slithered off into the woods.

Ring necked snakes are quite cool looking and are found frequently in my area. From what I've read there are a northern and southern version. I've handled several of the southern ring necked snakes and they never attempted to bite. However, I have read that they can bite, and some people reported a mild reaction at the site of the bite. I've seen them so frequently that I don't even pick them up anymore. They all look the same down here.
