My snow corn has a couple of 'scuffed' scales, I'm not overly concerned as he has been going through the usual breeding-season craziness, however today I have noticed this spot where the scale has gone brown and looks broken off - is this just a sign of general wear and tear? He is usually in such perfect condition I've not experienced this before!

It's not normal and I'd take steps to treat it quickly. Bacteria can enter any breaches in the protective scales/skin. At a minimum I'd wash the area with anti-bacterial soap and apply triple antibiotic cream a couple times per day. Then see if the treatment is successful after the next shed. If it gets worse before the shed take her to the vet. I'm assuming this isn't a bite from a live prey item? Even if it is start treatment.
 
Thanks guys, I am fairly sure my local vet has a reptile specialist so I will give them a call tomorrow and book him in asap
